1 Ava Kelly Professor French THE 104 Spirit Empowered Living 27 September 2023 Reading Response For Celebration of Discipline In the book Celebration of Discipline, Richard J. Foster emphasizes the importance of spiritual growth that can challenge us to grow our relationship with God in three ways. Foster also pushes that the disciplines are not laws but strategies we can take to place ourselves before God so that he can transform us. The three categories of the twelve disciplines include the inward, outward, and corporate categories. The inward disciplines are meditation, prayer, fasting, and study. These are to bring spiritual intimacy with God, not only through communication with him but also biblical literacy, to have a strong foundation in him. The outward disciplines include simplicity, solitude, submission, and service. These help one walk out the inward disciplines by taking action in our personal lives to engage with God. The last category is corporate, which includes confession, worship, guidance, and celebration. The corporate category builds off inward and outward disciplines to engage with others around us to encounter God. Without these disciplines, one would not be well-rounded and not live up to the fullness we can have when we walk with God as a whole person. My critique of the book is that I immensely enjoyed the depth and detail put into it. And because of that, the book forces the reader to take time to meditate and apply what each chapter is about. Although it may be a challenging read for everyone, it is worth the time and effort it takes. I enjoyed the Celebration of Disciple because it highlighted some areas I would like to do better in my spiritual walk, including fasting, simplicity, and study. Many Christians want to live
2 a godly life, but the church today, in its push for modernization and hype, loses the time for what one would call adult Sunday school. Foster's book not only helped me in my spiritual journey in a practical way but will continue to help many Christians today.
