Name: Tracey Young BIBLE STUDY PROJECT: OBSERVATION TEMPLATE Passage: Acts 19:11-22 A. I have read Acts 19:11-22 in both a formal translation (NASB, NRSV, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com o Yes o No B. Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. These similarities and differences should be related to the text itself rather than the translation. For example, an observation like, “The formal translation is harder to read” is not an acceptable observation because it deals with the translation itself rather than the text. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find providing that you meet the minimum amount for each one. 1. Similarity – Each of the translations also acknowledges the existence of evil spirits and the casting out of evil spirits, diseases, and sicknesses. 2. Similarity – Each of the translations acknowledges that new believers came forward and confessed and the word of the Lord spread widely.
3. Difference – ESV states that itinerant (traveling) Jewish exorcists invoked the name of the Lord to cast out evil spirits, yet the NIV version states “some jews” went around driving out evil spirits invoking in the name of Lord Jesus. 4. Difference – ESV version states “the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.” While the NIV states “the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.” The ESV version implies overpowered and wounded and the NIV says they were given a beating and bleeding. Wounded, which could be a bruise, does not exactly mean bleeding. 5. Difference – ESV Acts 19:18 “Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices.” NIV Acts 19:18 “Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done.” ESV i mplies new believers, as the NIV uses past tense and states believed. C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying. 1. Main characters: (List them) Paul, Sons of Sceva (7 priests), Timothy, Erastus 2. Plot: Paul performs miracles for God, curing people of illness, evil spirits, and disease. A few Jews offered assistance. A wicked demon was exorcised by the Seven sons of Sceva. "Jesus, I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?" was the wicked spirit's reply. When the Greeks and
Jews in Ephesus realized God, they felt terrified, confessed, and openly destroyed the sorcery or magic. The possessed man overpowered and injured them. Word of the Lord spread. After arriving in Jerusalem (via Macedonia, Achaia, and Rome), Paul decided to extend his stay in Asia and sent Timothy and Erastus to Macedonia. 3. Story structure: (50-100 words) Introduction: Paul performs miracles for God and the Jews help cast out demons. Inciting Incident: The exorcism performed by the Seven sons of Sceva gets a reply from the demon stating, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Rising Action: The possessed man overpowered and wounded them. Climax: The Greeks and the Jews recognized God, became fearful, and confessed. Falling Action: They burned their magic or sorcery and the word of Lord spread. Resolution: Paul travels to spread the word and sends Timothy and Erastus to Macedonia. D. List basic observations about this passage using the “Key Question” for observation. Remember to consult and review chapters 17 and 37 in Everyday Bible Study. This will help you be more detailed in your answers to “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how.” Please be detailed and specific. 1.
