Be sure to complete each Response section. When referencing scripture or other materials, only include a brief or abbreviated summary along with the citation as these cannot be included in the required word count. When you have completed the document, save it to your computer and follow the instructions in your course to submit the assignment to your instructor. 1. Did you complete all the assigned reading for the week? [Yes] 2. Article of Faith Please identify the Article of Faith studied this week Response: This week we studies the 2 nd Article of Faith: “We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression,” 3. Explanation of Key Events and Scriptures Demonstrate your comprehension of fundamental truths of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and your ability to use the scriptures to teach them. Be sure to include specific scripture references from the assigned readings Scenario: Imagine you have been asked by a family member or friend to share what you believe about the truths and events you studied this week. Share in your own words several insights as though you are really trying to teach someone. Include at least three scripture references to support the truths you teach (you may reference them, but there is no need to quote them). Share your testimony as you would when teaching someone. Your response will be evaluated by the following criteria: 1. 200–300 words in length (please include your word count at the bottom of the section). 2. Include at least 3 scripture references . Response: This week's lesson really hit home. Scriptures I have grown up reading a memorizing came with a new light as I saw them in a different way through pondering and prayer. Especially 2nd Nephi 2:25, in which sorrow and joy exist together in a balanced state. They must both exist in our lives in order to fully understand the difference between the light righteousness brings and the darkness sin brings into our lives. It gives me comfort to know that
trials and sadness that occurs happens for a reason. Just as explained it gives me knowledge that the Lord really is in the driver’s seat in helping us return to him as long as we have faith and use our agency to follow him. Moses 6:57 - I really appreciate this scripture as it foretells the promise of a savior since the very beginning. That the fall wasn't an accident; that it was actually planned all along so God's children may become like him and inherit his glory. It helps me further understand in my life the powerful need for a savior and without him there would be no hope to repay the debt and return back home. Alma 12:24 - This passage has always been a helped me understand what my decisions I should make as I go throughout life. Knowing that this life is a probationary state to help us prepare to meet God gives a simple but applicable roadmap for our decisions. While I am far from perfect and make mistakes often, it gives me comfort to know due to this roadmap and probationary state we can repent and be forgiven for those sins. I am grateful for these truths and the impact it makes in my life. I couldn’t look at life the same way without the knowledge of God’s plan for us to become more like his son and return to his presence. Word Count: 315 4. Synthesis: Personal Relevance and Application to the Real World There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and concern for them again. Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own: abortion abuse/bullying addiction depression divorce domestic violence energy/environmental issues violence gambling genocide
homosexuality international terrorism materialism natural disasters pornography unemployment poverty racial strife/hatred religious intolerance/persecution threats to religious liberty same-sex marriage suicide Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know. Write a response in at least 300-450 words and list your word count at the end of your response. 5. The world problem/issue I chose this week is: Divorce Response: Divorce is a very serious topic that should be handled on a case-to-case situation. Some situations really do constitute a separation if it creates a toxic environment for both parties. It can be difficult as well as it seems that there are some situations that probably are within repair but others might not see it that way. Based on revelation for me and my situation with me and my wife, I think that if both parties are sincerely trying to improve, they can make their situation not only work, but thrive. That’s the power of agency, the power to essentially create new situations you never thought was possible. As with all righteous desires, our heavenly father and Jesus Christ are there to help us succeed in those righteous pursuits. What we’ve talked about up to this point is the effect of divorce and the ability to choose to stay together for the Husband and Wife. In most cases divorce effects more than just the couple such as their kids. Growing up I’ve known many friends who dealt with a divorce between their parents and a common theme is that they seem to blame themselves for it happening. Just as we know with the 2 nd Article of Faith, we are not responsible for Adam’s transgression, we are also not responsible for the possible mistakes and sins of our earthly parents. Sometimes things just don’t work out or someone in the relationship gives up and takes another path that can negatively affect others. I wish my friends growing up were able to realize this principle of the gospel and see how they could move forward knowing they are responsible for their own agency and not the agency of others around them. I am grateful for to knowledge the gospel brings in it’s fullness and how it can relate to every situation in life as we seek answers to our questions.
