Exegetical Worksheet
Biblical Passage: Genesis 15:6
Name: Diana Prado Date: 10/29/23
Time Invested: Observations
Quick Observations/Questions Raised (What questions did the passage raise when you first read it? What are your initial thoughts?)
Why did Abram and his offspring have to wait /suffer for 400 years in order to be great? What is the iniquity of the Amorites?
Translation Comparison (Are there any major differences in the translations? Check at least 3.)
ESV: And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
New Living Translation
6 And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD counted him as righteous because of his faith.
Good News Translation w/ Apocrypha
6
Abram put his trust in the Lord, and because of this the Lord was pleased with him and accepted him.
King James Version
6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
There are minor and major differences in the scriptures in all 3 compared to the ESV version. In the KJV it says “for righteousness” vs “as righteousness”. The NLT and GNT identify Abram as the “he” in the ESV. The GNT version was clearer to understand than the other versions.
Historical Tools (What is the level 1 and level 2 context and how does that affect my reading of the text?)
Level 1: The Lord appeared to Abram in a vision where they discussed Abram having faith in Him giving Abram an heir and lots of children for his household. Also promised him a lot of land.
Level 2: Author is Abram.
Audience: Just Abram and the Lord.
Geography: Abram had just arrived from Chedorlaomer and went to King’s Valley/Valley of Shaveh, and/or the Promise Land.
Reading this passage, I learned that the Lord was just simply trying to tell Abram to trust in Him and that he, Abram, was going to get what he wanted, an heir, and more, land.
Literary Tools (What is the genre of the text? What is the book/section/passage’s purpose and structure? How does this text fit that purpose?)
The purpose of the passage is to have Faith in God and that everything will come in his timing. The genre is narrative, and
Abram is telling the reader about his vision and a little bit of a prophetic view because God tells Abram that his offspring will suffer for 400 years BUT they all will come to be great leaders and own a lot of possessions as a reward.
Theological Tools (Are there any key theological terms or concepts in the text? How do I understand the text in light of Christ and the full testimony of the Bible?)
Some key terms are:
“…So shall your offspring be…”
“…cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other…”
“…birds of prey…”
“sojourners”
“servants”
“Judgment on the nation”
“…iniquity of the Amorite…”
“…a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch”
“covenant”
15:19-21
God wanted Abram to have faith in Him fully and by Abram showing his faithfulness, God was going to reward him with a lot of heirs and land for them all to rule for a lot of generations.
Application (What does this text tell me about God? About myself? About the world? About how I relate to God?)
This text showed me that it is okay to sometimes have questions about going through certain things. God always has a purpose/plan for us in His timing, and not ours. It may take a little while, but God will reward you with more than what you have planned for. This passage makes me understand a lot of patience and faith. I know there was a time in my life when I questioned the things I was going through; however, the place I am now is what I wanted when I was going through some trials. I’ve learned that everything is a step-by-step process and everything that happens to us now is to prepare us for something in the future.
