PSYC 100 Jakob Hutson Dr. Chapman November 14th, 2023 Reflection Circle Paper How much did you know about clinical psychology before we started? I was aware of what I believed were the core concepts associated with clinical psychology, and what entailed with those concepts. I have two siblings who are still quite young, twelve and fifteen years old, and they have been in both IOP and PHP therapy for roughly two years. Due to this, I am quite familiar with some of the specific processes that go into childhood therapy. Describe your five biggest takeaways from this course up to this point The clinical choices assignments on Achieve have drastically helped me learn more about clinical psychology. What stands out for me is how even small differences in symptoms in these cases can steer the diagnosis in different directions. These assignments have become a practical playground for understanding the nuances of clinical decision-making. The causes of mental and anxiety disorders have been quite interesting to learn about, especially when trying to apply my newly learned knowledge to therapy sessions with family members. The massive amount of growing evidence for the importance of
dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine gave a lot of context for why people talk so much about these neurotransmitters in society today. The historical overview of abnormal psychology was particularly captivating, revealing the changing perspectives on mental disorders throughout the ages. Delving into the various schools of thought and their contributions to the field has provided an understanding of modern approaches to mental health. The journey from ancient explanations and treatments such as the trephination, to the Greek and Roman approaches of the physiological focuses such as the yellow bile associated with mania, to contemporary biopsychosocial models has been extremely interesting. Learning about therapeutic approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, and humanistic approaches has expanded my understanding of how clinicians address diverse mental health concerns. The exposure to evidence-based practices and the practical application of these approaches in case studies has particularly changed my way of viewing the subject. The real-life examples shown in the video activities have given me a real insight into how these topics are important and how they are implemented outside of the classroom, and outside of my own personal family matters. The telemental health crisis care video I related quite a bit, as during the COVID-19 pandemic, my sibling's mental health got much worse, and I saw firsthand what just having a therapist to talk to did for them. Other video activities that had an impact on me include the Fight or Flight one, and the Bipolar Disorder During Adolescence activity video.
How has your perspective on clinical psychology changed, been challenged, reinforced, or deepened due to what you learned in this course? Prior to taking this course, my understanding of clinical psychology was limited to a general awareness of mental disorders and the role of therapists in providing treatment. However, through the course's comprehensive exploration of various topics, my perspective has been significantly broadened. The course has reinforced my belief in the importance of evidence-based practices in clinical psychology. The thorough examination of various therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). This course has helped me develop a nuanced understanding of the differences between certain topics, taught me the history of why the scientific process functions how it does, and why certain methods are no longer used.
