Leadership/Teamwork 1. Using your own words, why do you think a medical professional should be able to demonstrate leadership and teamwork skills and how this benefits the patients they serve. It is important for a medical professional to demonstrate leadership and teamwork because it will help make important decisions about a patient. It is also important to have a good relationship with co-workers so that they can come together and develop plans and ideas. Patients will benefit from a medical professional that is confident enough to help the patient through good communication. 2. In the space below, outline what task(s) you currently do that demonstrate leadership/ teamwork skills. Justify why this task(s) qualify as demonstrating leadership/teamwork skills. If you currently do not have any task(s) you can use, what barriers have caused this? Currently, I haven’t done any type of tasks involving leadership skills or teamwork due to COVID- 19. The resources and opportunities are limited. However, I will continue to search for a leadership role that involves communication and teamwork. 3. In the space below list 1-2 more tasks/activities you can accomplish over the next 1-2 years to demonstrate leadership/teamwork skills and why you feel these activities are a good fit for you. I plan to tutor other students in science subjects. For example, Psychology or Biology because I enjoy both subjects very much and I would like to help others succeed in these courses. Tutoring is a good fit for me because it will help me develop communication skills and cope with people. This will help me with leadership skills because it will show that I am using my knowledge to help others in need.
Research Experience (20 points) Research activities are important admissions factors for many medical profession programs. Even those programs that do not require it, strongly encourage it or would say it gives you a competitive edge. This section aims to help you start navigating this process. Always Remember you also have the Office of Undergraduate Research to help once you actually begin this journey! Finding a research mentor (10 points) 1. List two research topics you would find to be appealing? For example, you could say genetic risk factors for breast cancer, the impact of socioeconomic status on heart disease, or how therapy helps treat anxiety. (these are examples….there isn’t really a wrong answer here). One research topic I find appealing is neuroscience. For example, how broca’s area/ wernicke’s affects the brain and also the individual. How self isolation impacts the brain. 2. Based upon your answer to question 1, what are 2-3 departments here at UCF where this type of research may be conducted? (Examples for the questions above: Biomedical Science, Health Science, and Psychology). I would like to do my research either in the Biomedical Sciences or Psychology department. I would like to work on a topic that involves the concept of the human brain. 3. Now, the tricky part, go to the departments you listed in question 2. Find the page with the faculty listings and look to see if any faculty research something similar to your topic. Provide one name of a faculty member that would be a good mentor for you and explain why based upon their research. Under the Biomedical Sciences department, I believe that Dr. Amber Southwell could be a good mentor. She researched Neurodegenerative disease modeling and preclinical development of experimental therapeutics and biomarkers with a focus on Huntington Disease. Under the Psychology department, Jeffrey S. Bedwell would also be a good mentor because he is interested in symptoms within mood disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, social anxiety severity, and suicidal thoughts/attempts. Draft an Email (10 points) In the above questions you identified research topics of interest, the departments in which they may be studied here at UCF, and identified at least one faculty member who studies something similar to your topic of interest. In the space below draft a professional, 3-4 paragraph email to the faculty member you found above. Be sure to state your name, your role at UCF, and why you would like for them to consider you as an undergraduate research associate. Dear Professor Bedwell , I am a first year student at UCF majoring in Biomedical Sciences. I found out your research in mood disorders on the Psychology department website. I am interested in learning more about the symptoms of depression, mood disorders and social anxiety severity. I would like to request a time to talk with you about the research opportunity in Cognitive Neuroscience and about possible undergraduate opportunities in your lab.I would like to know if we could schedule an appointment or I can drop by your office hours. I would like to be considered for this research because I have a passion in Psychology and Neuroscience and I would like to grow my knowledge in the field. Also, apply what I have learned in my classes to deal with real-life situations. In the future, a plan to become a Neurosurgeon and I would like to obtain experience to master my skills to apply it to my future job. I have attached my resume and unofficial transcript. Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide. I look forward to talking to you soon. Best, Rubi Calderon

Entrance Exam Studying(10 points) Study Resources (5 points) 1. What type of medical professional do you wish to become and what entrance exam must you take? I wish to become a Neurosurgeon. The entrance exam I must take is the MCAT. 2. Please list 2-3 specific resources you plan to use to study for the entrance exam. For each resource, explain in 2-3 sentences why you think this resource will be useful. I plan to take Kaplan test preparation in order to prepare for the test. I believe this will be successful because it allows me to take up to twenty practice tests that I believe will prepare me to pass the test and get the score that I desire. I will also go to the PHPL office to check out MCAT workbooks to practice more. I think this is very helpful because it will give me an opportunity to obtain even more information from different sources. When do you plan to take it and why? (5 points) In the space below provide a simple outline of what semester/year you plan to take your entrance exam at this time. Why do you think this is a good time to do so? I plan to take the MCAT in my Junior year. I think it’s a good time since by then I had completed all the necessary science courses that will appear on the test. Junior Year: 2022 - Fall Semester
