1 Newbern Lacey Newbern Mr. Townsend Education Psychology 02 December 2023 Utilizing the Instructional Hierarchy in the Classroom What exactly is the instructional hierarchy, you might ask? Well, it’s the framework that helps educators understand and prioritize the steps to effectively teach new skills or concepts. It provides a roadmap for instruction, starting from the basic foundational skills to more complex tasks. By breaking down the learning process into manageable steps, we can better support our students’ progress and success. The Instructional Hierarchy consist of four stages which are as followed: Acquisition, Fluency, Generalization, and Adaptation. In the initial phase, students begin to acquire a skill through imitating and receiving direct guidance from their teacher. In the fluency phase, students gain proficiency through ample independent practice and receive feedback from their teachers. The generalization phase is when students demonstrate the ability to perform the skill quickly and accurately, using the same methods they were taught. They also learn when and when not to apply the skill. Finally, in the adaptation phase, students can successfully tackle new and complex problems. Now let’s see how we can apply this concept in the classroom. Hypothesis: Students who receive explicit instruction in phonics will demonstrate improved reading fluency. Intervention: The Phonics Pal The Phonics Pal is an intervention program designed to provide explicit instruction in phonics to struggling readers. It follows the systematic instructional hierarchy, starting with basic phoneme awareness and progressing to more complex phonics skills.
2 Newbern The intervention begins with a diagnostic assessment to identify the specific areas of phonics that students need support in. Based on the results, the Phonics Pal program provides targeted interventions that focus on building phonemic awareness, phoneme blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds. The program incorporates engaging activities, such as interactive games, tactile materials, and visual aids to make the learning experience fun and motivating. It also includes regular progress monitoring to track students' growth and adjust the instruction accordingly. By targeting the foundational skills of phonics, the Phonics Pal intervention aims to improve students' reading fluency. Through explicit instruction and practice, students will develop a stronger understanding of letter-sound relationships, decoding skills, and word recognition, leading to improved overall reading ability. With the Phonics Pal intervention, students will have the opportunity to receive targeted support in phonics, leading to increased reading fluency and ultimately enhancing their skills and knowledge in the classroom.
