Work-related Stress and Family Midalys Vasallo PSY7115 Capella University
Proposed Research Topic: Work-related Stress This research should explore the topic of work-related stress and how it affects the family. According to Bhui et al. (2016), work-related stress can be defined as the harmful physical and emotional response that might occur when the demands and pressure of work placed on them do not meet the workers' resources, needs, or capabilities (CDC, 2014). The failure to treat or manage workplace stress might result in both mental and physical issues. Work-related stress can even have an impact on the family dynamic, including the children’s mental health (Bhui et al., 2016). When parents have a bigger workload it can lead to more interpersonal conflicts, and in return, it can interfere with their effective parenting skills (Bhui et al., 2016). Workplace stressors can have many forms and they mainly depend on the culture of the industry or organization. The school of thought of Humanistic Psychology can bring more insight and understanding into the study of work-related stress and work-life balance. Needing Further Research The study of workplace stress and work-life balance might offer new insight into an under-researched topic. Although workplace stress has been studied sufficiently, most of the research seems to focus on how stress affects the workplace culture, productivity, and the effects it has on the individual. Specific research on how much influence workplace stress has on the family seems to be limited so far. According to (Sadiq, 2020) work-related stress can have great effects on the family's unhappiness and dissatisfaction. Feeling abandoned, estranged, unwanted, and lonely are some of the causes of marital dissatisfaction (Van Gordon et al., 2017). These effects are not only felt by the couple but also by their children. Children might feel they lack the necessary love and
emotional and psychological support they need (Sadiq, 2020). By integrating humanistic psychology to help bring understanding of the people and their feelings and perspectives, the study of workplace stress and family dissatisfaction might show more development (Dong et al., 2023). Although there is research on work-related stress and the effects it has on job performance and satisfaction, there is not enough on the impact it has on the family. More importantly, there is less research on how humanistic psychology can help when applied to this topic. Theoretical Foundations The Humanistic approach supports the effects of workplace stress and family dissatisfaction effectively. Humanistic psychology not only studies behavior and interactions, but it also argues that humans are not only defined by their environment but also by self-perception and individual meanings (Henley, 2018). Humanistic psychology can bring a better understanding of why people might behave the way they do without having to apply a behavioristic method. Because of this, the application of this school of thought is essential for studying the influence of workplace stress and family dissatisfaction. This approach allows us to take into account the perception of a person and this ability to include such individualistic methods, is what makes humanistic psychology such a great fit for this research.
