2 Journal Topic Section The topic that I chose for this project was domestic terror. I figured that most people would choose the serial killer scenario. Although that scenario also intrigues me, I decided to go a different avenue this time in order to learn something new. The mental state and motivations of domestic terrorism are intriguing to me. Campus shootings and other mass shootings that have been happening over the years. They have made me more curious to explore the various aspects that go into someone’s decision-making process when it comes to domestic terrorism. It is interesting how environmental, social, and psychological factors shape the different motives. The mindset of someone involved in domestic terrorism is terrifying yet can be brilliant at the same time. Understanding the why may help explain their motivation behind the crime. When it comes to mass shootings, it hits close to home for me. On November 7, 2018, I was supposed to take my daughter-in-law to Borderline’s Bar and Grill for a girls’ night out. When I got home from work, she told me that she wasn’t feeling that good, so we stayed in. Well, that night, David Long decided to go there and open fire. My daughter-in-law and I got very lucky that night. Crime Type In the case of Seung-Hui Cho it was considered a domestic terror. His was an act dangerous to human life. “Terrorist acts do not seem to be the behavior of rational, sane people, which leads to the question of whether or not there is a psychopathology of terrorism” (Gavin, 2019, p.145). Seung-Hui Cho used multiple weapons to intentionally hurt many people that day. By going and purchasing the different guns and ammo over many weeks prior to the shooting, he started planning this long before he took action. Although there was no evidence that he targeted
3 any of his victims, there was evidence found that his assault was premeditated and highly coordinated. Motivational Factors After Seung-Hui Cho and his family moved from South Korea to the United States, the kids in his neighborhood and from his church started to bully him all the time. According to his family, he was known to be shy. Once he reached middle school, he was diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder with selective mutism and major depressive disorder. He should have started seeing a therapist at that point, but that didn’t happen until he reached college. By the time he got to Virginia Polytechnic University, he had already become more socially disconnected, prone to periodic emotional outbursts and moody. By the time he reached his last year in college, he had finally had enough, according to the package he had sent to NBC after he shot the first two people. In that package, he sent video clips, pictures of him with his weapons, and the manifesto he wrote. He spoke of his hate for the rich, and about being bullied. In the manifesto, he claimed to be a vigilante for the weak and powerless. References: Adams, D. (August 31, 007). The alienation and anger of Seung-hui Cho. The Roanoke Times.
