6-3 Article Critique Kathy Spencer Southern New Hampshire University PSY 201 – Educational Psychology Dr. Michele Mortensen August 6, 2023
6-3 Article Critique What is the issue that the article is specifically addressing? Is this a significant problem or issue related to the concepts and theory in this course? Why or why not? I chose to do my article critique on “Strategies for Effective Classroom Management in the Secondary Setting,” written by Paul Pedota. In this article, the author shows us multiple strategies for teachers to help create ways to lower not only the number of interruptions or disrespect that can happen in a classroom. The different strategies from the author are based on his personal experiences and beliefs. “Individuals should use this article as a guide and not as a complete list of strategies or techniques that can be used for effective classroom management” (Pedota, 2007, p. 163). Teachers have been dealing with the battle regarding students disrespecting teachers and other students for years. The information the author addresses is related to the theories of this course. By reading this article, both current and future teachers can find multiple ways on how to improve their classroom management skills and be able to help the students be accountable for their actions. The article covers many areas that can affect a students’ productivity within the classroom. What references did the author use in this article? The author used multiple resources and references throughout the article to support his findings and support the strategies and ideas he listed throughout the article. Some of the references he used to help support his information were: Classroom Management Techniques, Effective School Research and Student Behavior, Discipline with Dignity, Rethinking High School. Best Practice in Teaching, Learning and Leadership, Maintaining Sanity in the Classroom, Teaching Secondary Students Through Their Individual Learning Styles: Practical
Approaches for Grades 7-12, The Quality School: Managing Students Without Coercion, Strategies for Managing Behavior Problems in a Classroom, Strategies for Effective Teaching, Why are Experienced Teachers Leaving the Profession. The references that he used were reliable sources, psychological, and academic journals. Did the article contain research? What data was used? What instruments, if any; were used to collect data? Although the article did have a few good reference points that were used to establish a solid foundation, there were no actual instruments or data collection efforts made by the author. Within our own textbook and discussion questions, we have covered and gone over the significance in creating a positive and productive learning environment for each of our students. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, this includes teachers. What were some of the conclusions, if any, to the research in this article? Throughout the article, the author gave teachers different ideas to help teachers have more effective classroom management. The author provided us in the article with different strategies; some of those strategies are: “seating plans, physical surroundings, housekeeping procedures, displays, instruction, setting classroom standards for behavior and work, and of course, communication” (Pedota, 2007, p. 163-165). Was this article reliable and valid? Explain. In my opinion, the article is not only reliable, but it is valid as well. The author did a decent job of breaking down each of the different strategies and explaining how to use them in the classroom. The author ensured that the information he was providing the readers was beneficial not only for the teachers but also for the students. Taking the time to make a separate paragraph for each strategy made the article easier to read and understand.

Was this article well written? Thoughtful and reflective? In my opinion, the article was written well. Many thought-provoking concepts were part of this article. The author does refer to his own personal experiences as a teacher and school administrator. He explains how each one of the strategies is there to help teachers develop a more structured classroom setting, regardless of how long they have been teaching. What were the limitations in this article? Any variables? The limitation of this article that I found was when the article was written. The strategies he mentioned throughout the article may have worked during the time frame that the article was written, but they may not work in some of today’s classrooms. I noticed that no actual data was collected if the author had taken and applied the strategies to an actual classroom setting, the information from that data would have been beneficial. Students today have become way more disrespectful towards their teachers, and of course, as everything does, things change. Any other thoughts, comments? Although I found this article interesting, I also wanted to see how the strategies mentioned were used in an actual classroom setting. I do feel that the environment of each classroom should not only be structured, but they need to be able to be changed around based on the students in that class. It is part of the teachers' responsibility to ensure that all the students in their classrooms feel safe, but at the same time, they themselves need to feel safe. When there are students that are consistently disrupting class with negative behavior, the teacher needs to be able to handle the situation and have the backing of not just the school administration but the parents of that student as well. The African saying, “it takes a village to raise a child” came to mind when I was reading this article. Teaching is not an easy job by any stretch of the imagination. I have 2 cousins that are teachers in different areas of Los Angeles, California. One is a
kindergarten teacher and the other one is a middle school teacher. Sadly, even some of the younger kids in the kindergarten class are just as disrespectful as the middle schoolers, according to my cousin. She is a very patient person and works with them to show them that the way that they have been treating not just her but also their classmates has not been very respectful. Sometimes she wins the battle, but there have been many days where she does not. I have told both of them of this particular class and they are now looking into new ways to be able to engage and make changes for the better with their classes. They are both hopeful that this next school year will their best one yet, and the first step in being able to really support their students.
