Podcast Interview Destiny Luke Rasmussen University PSY3738: The Psychology of Social Media Megan Norwalk November 24, 2023
Sandra: Hey listeners, and welcome to “Let’s Get Social: The Podcast for All Things Social Media.” Today, we have expert social media analyst Destiny here to answer some of our burning questions about mental illness in social media. Destiny: Hey Sandra. Thank you so much for having me here to do an interview on mental illness! Sandra: Of course! We are so excited to get to learn more about mental illness. Destiny: From what I know social media is used by a lot of people around us to communicate and network. Some of these people use social media for enjoyment in many forms. Social media is a digital culture that does refer to people’s awareness as well as behaviors. Everyone has their own opinion when they are on social media. Sandra: Destiny, a lot of people have concerns regarding mental health. Do you think that social media can contribute to mental health? Destiny: That’s a great question, Sandra! Since it’s a relatively new technology, there’s little research to establish the long-term consequences, good or bad, of social media use. However, multiple studies have found a strong link between heavy social media and an increased risk for depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts (Robinson & Smith, 2021). Sandra: That is very interesting. Can you share some examples of signs that social media is impacting mental health? Destiny: Yes, some signs that social media is affecting your mental health would be how social media use may be problematic. If it causes you to neglect face-to-face relationships, distracts you from work or school, or leaves you feeling envious, angry, or depressed. Similarly, if you’re
motivated to use social media just because you’re bored or lonely, or want to post something to make others jealous or upset, it may be time to reassess your social media habits (Robinson & Smith, 2021) Indicators that social media may be adversely affecting your mental health include: Spending more time on social media than with real-world friends. Comparing yourself unfavorably with others on social media(Robinson & Smith, 2021). Susan: I agree that it seems that social media can have an impact on mental health. There are so many social media sites. Can you elaborate more about the effects of connecting with others on social media? Destiny: It is essential to note that people who have mental illness tend to use social media to reach out to others especially when they are in need. Some people are not as welcoming as others when it comes to mental health especially on social media. I’ve seen people state if you are depressed go for a walk and get some air and that may help but it does not solve the problem. People experience cyberbullying. Or you worry that you have no control over the things people post about you(Robinson & Smith, 2021). Susan: Wow! This is such a powerful conversation, Destiny. Thank you for taking the time to interview with us today. You gave me and my listeners answers to the questions we have been dying to know so much about when it comes to social media and mental health. Destiny: Susan, thank you for having me. It has been a pleasure being able to answer important questions that concern others. Susan: Before we end this chat, is there any pros to social media when it comes to mental illness.
