NAME: Review Assignment: Experimental Research Please use the following vignettes below to answer Questions 1 - 4. Dr. Scott is conducting a study to examine the relationship between the amount of studying and GPA scores. He chooses to implement this study at a high school and chooses high school seniors as his participants. He collects data on the amount of studying done by high school seniors throughout the year and then collects their GPA scores at the end of the year in order to run analyses. Dr. Rodriguez is conducting a study to examine the difference between college Freshmen’s drinking behaviors depending on a new safe drinking program that the college wants to implement. She randomly assigns each college freshman into a group that receives the safe drinking program and a group who doesn't receive the safe drinking program. She collects data on the amount of drinking from college freshmen throughout the year in order to run analyses. 1. Which researcher conducted an experimental study, and which researcher did not conduct an experimental study? Explain why in your answer.
Dr. Rodriguez would be the researcher who conducted an experimental study as she includes a form of manipulation to the variables before she collects the data. Dr. Scott had collected data over time. 2. Depending on the researcher you chose who conducted the experimental study in Question 1, what was the independent variable and what was the dependent variable in that experiment? The independent variable is the group of freshmen who doesn't receive the safe drinking program and the dependent variable is 3. Depending on the researcher you chose who conducted the experimental study in Question 1, were there any confounding variables that could influence the study’s results? If so, please explain how that confounding variable influences the internal validity of the study. 4. Depending on the researcher you chose who conducted the experimental study in Question 1, was there a control condition? If so, please explain how a control condition improves an experiment. 5. Explain the difference between a between-groups and within-groups experiment. 6. Provide your own example of a between groups and within-groups experiment. 7. Describe all 5 of the different order effects, and then explain how counterbalancing can help improve these order effects. 8. Explain the difference between internal and external validity, and explain why an experiment needs strong internal and external validity. 9. State the difference between construct and statistical validity, and explain why an experiment needs strong construct and statistical validity.
10. Describe the strategies a researcher needs when recruiting participants for an experimental research study. 11. Explain the experimenter expectancy effect and then describe how a double blind study can minimize this effect. 12. Our class did not use a pilot study for the first research project. Explain how a pilot study would have been beneficial for us before conducting our first research project.
