Article Critique The purpose of this paper is to assess School Counselors’ Knowledge of Functional Behavioral Assessments. I will discuss the major strengths and weaknesses throughout the article. Highlight two future areas of research from the Analysis and identify the problem of the analysis. Introduction and Problem Statement A functional behavioral assessment (FBA) is one of the tools used by school personnel to provide a fair educational experience for students in special education programs (Villalba et al., 2005).. School counselors' job duties state they must participate in school-level FBA teams. Concerns have arisen regarding school counselor awareness, training, and beliefs when it pertains to FBA procedures and practices. Major Strengths The article was able to emphasis the importance of training and knowledge that school counselors need to have regarding the FBA in order to best meet the needs of all students. Established that school counselors lack of knowledge and training pertained to the schools inability to establish a defined FBA team. Highlighted the discrepancies regarding the comfortbaility and knowledge and the lack of comfortbality and knowledge depending on the schools trainings, workshops and leadership. . Major Weaknesses The article was created using limited research regarding the correlation between school counselors and the FBA procedures and practices.
The survey was created to utilize as less time as possible, which caused important information that hich could have been effective in understanding the school counselors role or explaining why the school did not have an FIBA team. The limitation with only using one study to report school counselors experiences regarding the FBA process. Sample size , response rate and geographic location of the survey were limited, when considering the results in the article, individuals should proceed with caution. Two Future Areas of Research How to successfully establish a collaboration between school counselors and the special education program. Whether it be professional development trainings together or reconstructing the school counselors job role to ensure a collaboration amongst school conselours and the special education staff. There is limited research between school counselors and th FBA process, more research should be conducted to establish the knowledge and understanding of the FBA process amongst school conselors. Conclusion In conclusion, In order to gather useful information there should be a survey conducted without limitations. Itt is the the responsibility of school administrators and school districts to offer school counselors with the proper FBA training. School districts also play an important role in establishing FBA teams. If a school district does not have an FBA team, school couneslors are unable to complete all of their job duties to assist students.
