Discuss the major strengths and weaknesses throughout the article. As well as two future areas of research from the Analysis. Introduction and Problem Statement Emotional and behavioral difficulties negatively impact children's academics, occupation, and social skills. A counselor plays a critical role in the multidisciplinary evaluation of children with emotional disturbances. However, the field lacks a standard battery of assessment procedures for working with children with ED (Doyle et al., 2011). The lack of effective services to help children with ED and assist their families is a major concern. Major Strengths Highlights the importance of a counselor's role in meeting the needs of all children, including children with disabilities (Rudy & Levinson, 2008). Addresses the concerns that are specific to children with ED. Emphasizes school-based counselors' need for training and assistance to meet the needs of children with Emotional Disturbances. Provides assessments that have been proven to be effective in evaluating children with Emotional Disturbances. Provides best practices in the assessment of children with ED. Major Weaknesses The article is based on DSM - IV which is outdated, DSM - V is the newly updated and utilized.
Article Review 3 The article does not emphasize or elaborate on the 6 types of emotional disturbances or the symptoms to identify emotional disturbances. The measures identified in the article do not provide information regarding the cause of children's problems (Rudy & Levinson, 2008). Two Future Areas of Research The advantages of an Individualized Education Plan for students with ED. A thorough plan that includes adequate training for counselors to understand DSM VI and DSM V, to effectively diagnose and treat children with ED. Conclusion In conclusion, The noticeable weaknesses can become strengths with more thorough research that is updated. The implementation of the current DSM V is to understand the changes when it pertains to the special education classification and implications of Emotional Disturbance. Despite the weaknesses, the strengths of the article bring awareness to the discrepancies between school-based and community-based counselors. It also allows Schools and communities to develop adequate training to assist their clients to be effective in acknowledging, diagnosing, and treating children with ED. The future areas of research will assist educators and school counselors with the proper tools and accommodations for ED students to be successful in the classroom.
