Applied Exam 3 1. Describe how self-determination theory can influence a therapeutic recreation specialist’s approach to encouraging physical activity for an older adult. Many older adults don't engage in physical activity since they feel forced into doing so. Self- determination theory is about letting the person have control over their life/health by allowing them to make choices. By using self-determination theory we can help them understand that they have a choice in the activity. This could be done by giving multiple physical activity options and letting the older adult choose the one they would like to do. By allowing them to make the choice of the activity they are much more willing to participate in the activity since they felt they had the choice of doing it. 2. Discuss at least two challenges (found in this chapter) that an older adult may experience as he or she ages. Choose one of those challenges and a modality discussed in this chapter. Explain how the chosen modality can help to positively address the challenge. Two challenges an older adult can face as they age are arthritis and the risk of developing cancer. When thinking about arthritis one thing that could help is the ability to take back their physical activity. A great example of this is yoga, while it offers a more complex movement it also offers more basic movements. It is great to help stretch muscles and lose stiff joints in a fun and engaging way. Every yoga class I’ve been to has always offered easier poses for those who can’t lift themselves or struggle to do so for some time. Allowing them to take back the ability to do physical activity at their own pace and easiness it allows a positive outlook on working around the pain from arthritis. 3. Do you believe therapeutic recreation can become a global profession and find homes in other countries, such as Canada and South Africa, or European countries? Explain your answer.
I believe therapeutic recreation specialists can find the profession growing to the whole world. We already see daily that more and more people learn and want to be therapeutic recreation specialists. Quite a few countries already are learning and implementing therapeutic recreation services into their countries. I don’t think it will take long for other countries to see the upward trend and positivity that the profession brings and incorporate it into their professions. Therapeutic recreation is already seen in many countries just not as “therapeutic recreation” and it is already offered in some jobs. I think that by spreading the idea of therapeutic recreation we will find more and more countries picking it up and deciding to present professions for it. 4. Recreation and leisure are inherent parts of culture. What implications does this present regarding the purpose and nature of therapeutic recreation? How might traditional American or Western perspectives be irrelevant or unhealthy when applied to other cultures? This shows how different cultures based on their views will have different opinions on how therapeutic recreation should work. When we look at Western perspectives we see many differences from other cultures, therefore many things we do could be seen as irrelevant or unhealthy to other cultures. Examples of this could be how in Japan therapeutic recreation doesn’t exist and instead, a different version that fits the culture better is implemented. While they have the same “goals” the actual jobs themselves are different due to the culture. Some cultures don’t even see a use for therapeutic recreation since they implement it into their culture already. 5. What steps can you take to ensure that you are competent in your work with people from other cultures? I believe there are many steps one can take to be competent when working with those of other cultures. One idea is that of researching the culture. By researching, you can better understand the culture and what could be seen as offensive. Along with this learning the cultures’ beliefs on recreational therapy and how it works would be helpful. One could also simply ask the people
how their culture works and what they expect out of the program/work you provide. Using either of these would allow for a deeper understanding of the culture and would allow you to work competently without offending the people and their culture. 6. Identify at least three trends (e.g., social, economic, or cultural) that could affect the future of the profession and your potential for becoming a practicing professional. I think some trends that will affect the future of my profession are as follows; the growth of holistic care, more concern about mental health, and more open culutres. The growth of holistic care is putting more people into looking into recreational therapy as it provides holistic approaches to the outdoors. Our society is also showing more of a concern with mental health, and due to this many understand that it is okay to seek help for it as well. With more people seeking help for mental health recreational therapists are seeing more clients. Lastly, a more open culture is allowing for the expansion of recreational therapists. As the younger generations grow older they are turning more and more cultures to an open view of the world. Due to this many people are learning more about recreational therapy and seeking it out.
