Assignment 4-2 Final Project Milestone Two: Draft of Analysis Stephany Rosenau Southern New Hampshire University HSE 215: Child Growth & Cognitive Development Victoria Henderson November 22, 2023
Analysis The needs of a child ages birth to three-years-old include reaching specific milestones based on age. These milestones include things within social/emotional, language/communication, cognitive, and physical development. Some examples of age milestones are, around two months old, most children (75% or more) should be able to smile when talked to, watch you as you move, and move both arms and legs. Moving towards one-year-old, a child should be able to play games such as pat-a-cake, wave bye-bye, understand the word “no”, and pull themselves up to standing positions. By two years old, milestones such as saying at least two words together, pointing towards at least two body parts when asked, kicking a ball, and eating with a spoon should be achieved. At three years of age, a child should achieve the milestones of joining other children during play, talking in conversation, avoiding touching objects when warned not to, and putting some clothes on by themselves (CDC, 2023). By knowing these milestones and if the child has achieved the appropriate number of milestones in each category, it can be determined if a child is developmentally delayed and needs further assistance. The Birth to Three and Early Intervention program is customized to each child involved based on the developmental needs of the child. The primary coach assigned to each child will design an Individualized Family Service Plan with goals for the child’s development and will include the family, the primary coach, as well as support from professionals such as therapists and Early Childhood Special Education programs. The program itself is proficient in being tailored to each individual child’s needs and developmental delays. However, the program has a specific requirement that a child meet at least 25% or higher delay in specific areas of development to qualify for the program (Winnebago County, 2023). This means that if a child does not meet the 25% or higher requirement in any areas of development, they will not be
eligible to receive assistance from the Birth to Three and Early Intervention program. Leaving some families who need help without this resource for assistance. Birth to Three and Early Intervention promotes the personal and social functioning of children zero to three-years-old by providing custom services with professionals specific to the child’s developmental needs. Professionals that aide in the development of the child include Speech Pathologists, Physical and Occupational Therapists, and Early Childhood Special Education programs. By focusing on the area in which the child is developmentally delayed, the specialist in that area can help provide different services tailored to the delay. For example, Speech Pathologists would aide in any speech delays, while Physical Therapists would work on a child’s physical activity and movement. By addressing these delays early in childhood, it can prevent the need for more drastic intervention as the child gets older or into adulthood. I was unable to find any specific evidence-based practices within this program or any negative outcomes from the program. The Birth to Three and Early Intervention program will take the stories from those within the program and will document how the program has changed their child’s lives and helped them improve and reach their developmental milestones and goals. The risk and resiliency factors associated with this program influence the type of care plans created by addressing the specific needs of the child and their family. The developmental delays, and the possible reasoning behind the delays are taken into consideration and an Individualized Family Service Plan is created specifically for each child and family based on the developmental delays at hand.
