Angels Case Briana Davis University of Phoenix CPSS/420 Professor Thompson Relapse Prevention Plan A relapse prevention plan teaches a client self-control and coping skills. A relapse prevention plan is an essential component of Angel’s treatment. As Angel works towards his sobriety, he has high risk of substance use such as feelings of loneliness, depression, anxious and argumentative. According to the National institute on drug abuse, relapse prevention plan is “a collection of interdependent techniques which are intended to enhance self-control”, (Hendershot et al., 2011). To ensure more of a success rate for Angel's recovery a relapse plan is most necessary. In order to learn how to prevent relapse he needs to learn coping skills, understand the process and consequences, identify high risk situations and how to react to them, (Hendershot et al., 2011). Angel’s change of lifestyle is very important to him which is why relapse prevention is most important. Angel is currently at great risk for relapse and is in most need for the prevention. For Angel to cope he has developed strategies to cope. However, he recognizes the warning signs to relapse but if he follows his plan, he can easily overcome them. Strategies Angel’s three main strategies he is looking to incorporate with his treatment’s goals are motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and Eye movement Desensitization reprocessing. These three strategies are essential to Angels goals and success rate.
Angels Case Strategy 1 Motivational interviewing is to ensure change in his behavior, examine his situation and figure out options. It will empower him to figure out his own meaning, importance, and capability to make change, ( Understanding Motivational Interviewing | Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) , n.d.-d). Four important guiding principles for me to help Angel is resisting the right to reflex, understanding his motivations, listening to him and empathizing with him, and lastly empowering him, ( Understanding Motivational Interviewing | Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) , n.d.-d) . The objective is to see a change in Angel behavior through the power of motivation, confidence, willingness, and ability, ( Understanding Motivational Interviewing | Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) , n.d.-d) . Angel first will apply awareness to his discrepancy about alcohol, then focus on his ambivalence to his disorder, and the motivation he must restoring his relationship with family will empower him to change. After I developed an alliance with my client, I shared ideas on his focus which is recovery and then evoked his own thoughts on how we can motivate change. The relevance of motivational interviewing to Angel’s case is that Angel wants nothing more than a strong relationship with his children and grandchildren and is this case I feel like he would do whatever is possible to make that happen. That makes it the focus and motivator in Angels’ thought process. Angel communicating with family is a coping skill as well as motivation to do better. Strategy 2 Cognitive behavioral therapy is a psychological treatment and is effective for problems that Angel has such as depression, anxiety disorder, PTSD, alcohol and drug use, and his family/marital problems, (“What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,” 2017). Cognitive behavioral therapy will help Angel improve significantly and rehabilitate his life. (CBT) cognitive behavioral therapy is known to be more effective than other forms of psychological therapy or psychiatric medications, (“What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,” 2017). CBT helps Angel by changing the unhealthy thought process and emotions connected to
Angels Case his trauma and challenge the thoughts allowing him to acknowledge the reality of the trauma, (“What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,” 2017). One reference to why CBT is appropriate for Angel is that he has had a tough time facing his fears. However, CBT will help him to face them instead of avoiding them, identify them and find the proper way to prevent and improve them. CBT is 50-75% affective and CBT plus medication are most effective in helping people overcome mental illness, (Pun, 2022). Strategy 3 Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing which is a mental health treatment technic that could also help Angel with his PTSD, depression, and anxiety. The goal is for Angel to overcome his PTSD, anxiety, and depression to help him cope with his behavioral and sobriety. Usually, a person could fully recover from PTSD in just six months to a year , ( Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder , n.d.). However, one like Angel who has not done anything to overcome his PTSD can develop co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, and substance disorder, which is what Angel has, ( Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder , n.d.). EMDR is going to help Angel process his upsetting memories, thoughts, and feelings to what he has experienced or saw in the military. EMDR is an evidence-based treatment for Post traumatic stress disorder and has been studied by many researchers who has found it to be effective, ( Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder , n.d.). Motivation/Encouragement Angel’s biggest motivation is refurbishing his family. Angel has identified all of his thoughts and what needs to be improved. His goal is as simple as having a relationship with his family but the process and obstacles that are ahead of him will need to be taken in extreme measures. One thing that he has not forgotten is the work he has to put in, he is willing to take every measure. He has a grandchild on the way, and he knows he messed up as a father and wants a second chance with his grand baby. He is accepting his separation from his wife; however, he does speak to her every single day. This friendship he has with
