Personally, I think the greatest positive impact working with at-risk children would be in a school setting. Within a school setting it’s possible to work with children in both groups and individually and be able to observe their behaviors in different settings, such as individual one- on-one sessions, on the playground, in the lunchroom or in the classroom. Working with children who experience developmental delays such as speech or socioemotional delays is one area, I would like to focus on in a school setting. Schools are starting to incorporate preschool classes and being able to observe the child at an earlier age and provide interventions earlier on can help promote positive developmental skills. Not all schools provide preschool classes however, or parents may choose not to send their children to preschool, or even daycare, so these children would not have the opportunity to be observed at an earlier age, resulting in intervention being provided later. I would incorporate play therapy into my work as children learn and express themselves through play. Play therapy can give children a mental break from classroom work and learning, while giving them the opportunity to express themselves freely. Play therapy can also be utilized with speech delays by having the child select a toy and repeating the name of the toy, such as ball, or block, and playing with that toy. I have personally seen the impact that play therapy can have on at-risk children. Two of my three children have ADHD and see their school counselor regularly, as well as a counselor recommended by their pediatrician, both of whom utilize play therapy with my children. The school counselor utilized play therapy in a way to promote positive emotions and expressing emotions appropriately, also helping them with different techniques to use in the classroom to focus on their schoolwork. Their doctor recommended counselor utilized play therapy to get my children to open up about anything they want to talk about, it helps them feel safe and
comfortable in her office and talking to her about things they may not feel comfortable talking to their dad or I about. A main concern that I would have in a school setting would be time. It is important for children to complete their lessons in class to promote further education, so pulling them out of class would have to be for a very limited amount of time. There also is not a lot of time in a school day, so scheduling the children appropriately based on their needs would be important as well to ensure everyone that needs help, is receiving the help that they need.
