Week 4 Assignment: Policing in America CRJ 331 Forensic Psychology Professor Ball Damira Cooper October 30, 2023
Question 1: Officers play a huge role when dealing with individuals with mental illness. In most cases, officers are the first to respond in situations where an individual with mental illness is present. Officers go through intensive training so they have the tools to handle situations such as these so it ends most safely for all parties involved. Due to an increase in mental illness calls, law enforcement departments now offer specialized training for situations dealing with people with mental illness. Officers are trained to handle a wide range of problems that could arise. Officers are also the connecting line in most situations of mental illness individuals to health professionals, treatments, and any other services they may need. Question 2: The extent of knowledge an officer has on mental illness issues can improve their interactions with those they are helping and assisting. The protocols officers must follow in these type of situations plays a significant role in how they handle dealing with mental issues (1). Officers having a good connection with the community they are policing can help save someone's life or even escalate the situation. If the community has information, they will know how to help and make the officer's job smoother (3). Question 3: One of the stressors police faced within the scenario was the officer's uncertainty. He was not sure how to handle someone with a mental illness, which led to his hesitation. Another stress was the knife, which, anytime there is a weapon, can put officers on high alert. As soon as a firearm is spotted, the officers have to stay guarded because the weapon poses a threat to the officers. Lastly, the amount of time officers had to respond to the issue. Police officers try to arrive within a reasonable time, especially in a more severe call. Time or lack thereof can put more stress on an officer and affect their decision-making skills, deterring them from what they are trained on. Question 4: Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) assessments Forensic psychologists do these assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of CIT programs and where they can improve them. The training is usually roughly 40 hours and taught over five days (2). The purpose of these assessments is to examine. Force decision-
making assessments are to assess the decision-making process of police officers, especially in encounters such as involving individuals with mental illness. Forensic psychologists conduct psychological evaluations of police officers to check their mental health, stress levels, and coping mechanisms. They see a lot out in the field that would make the most muscular man crumble, feel stressed, or feel detached. In a sense, it's a test to ensure they are still human after doing such tedious work on a day-to-day basis. Question 5: The capacity Maggie Hendrick was working to assist Officer Smith was a consultant in providing guidance and knowledge on situations dealing with individuals with Mental illness. Maggie's experience made her an expert assistant; in any case, you can gain the most understanding when learning under someone who has encouraged this previously and handled it like a pro. Maggie assisted him by re- examining his CIT and techniques, which he had formerly known in training, to a higher expert level, which he can take with him to handle any other mental illness cases that may arise.
