PSY 328 Module Six Journal Template First, read Chapter 13 of your text. Next, complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Explain to what extent you value flexibility in yourself. Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. Flexibility is extremely valuable to me and how it impacts my way of life. Our text defines flexibility as a trait that is measured by the degree (scope and depth), or the extent to which a person can cope in novel ways (Shriaev 2016, p. 407). This has been an asset to me because it has allowed me to cope with life-altering events such as dealing with multiple deaths in the family, the COVID-19 pandemic, mental illnesses, childhood traumas, etc. Not only has it helped me cope, but also adapt to unexpected life changes so I can move forward. Describe your most common responses to stressors . Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. In order to start the coping process, one must identify the stressors that an individual has to face, these can be a single event or a continuous development (Shiraev 2016, p. 403). Personally, I have several responses to stressors in my life that include avoidance coping, keeping busy to avoid addressing the issue, excessive sleeping, suppressing emotions, and starvation; essentially many coping mechanisms that are not healthy. In recent months I’ve tried to take a different approach where I face the stressors head-on and make positive changes necessary to cope and get through the given stressor. Based on the results of your Big Five Personality Test and your own personal reflection, on a scale of low, mixed, or high, describe how you would rate your stress tolerance using the traits of hardiness, optimism, and dispositional optimism. Your response should be about 4 to 6 sentences in length. Stress tolerance as defined in our text is a stable pattern of behavior and experience that appears in the process of coping with significant stressors consisting of openness to experience, hardiness, and impulse control (Shiraev 2016, p. 413). The results of my Big Five Personality test showed that I scored highest in agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness with a lower score in extraversion. Based on the results and my own personal reflection I would consider my stress tolerance to be mixed. Out of the stress tolerance traits hardiness, optimism, and dispositional optimism; I find hardiness to be the trait that suits my stress tolerance because of my general ability to withstand difficult conditions (Shiraev 2016, p. 412). 1
Describe how you struggle with traits that negatively affect the coping process. Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. Generally, I struggle with traits that negatively affect my coping process in the aspect that I tend to automatically be affected by thinking of the worst-case scenario. I’ve always had the mentality of prepare of ‘prepare for the best but expect the worst’ and if there’s a problem, it’s because of something I did (even if it isn’t) and I start to take it out on myself. This behavior typically results in coping mechanisms I mentioned in the previous questions regarding stressors. Describe the strategies you use when you find yourself experiencing cognitive distortions . Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. When faced with experiencing cognitive distortions I tend to jump to conclusions. The way my mind works when faced with varying situations typically resorts to predicting the outcome, which tends to be an irrational and negative worst-case scenario. Many times I find myself overthinking it and the situation turns out fine. So to combat these thoughts and feelings, I try to be more aware of my thoughts and repeat positive affirmations to myself such as “It’s going to be okay. Even if things go bad, I can still deal with this,” calm down, breathe, and take it one step at a time to help calm down my overthinking mind. Describe the applications of adjustment and coping you see in your experiences in the workplace, at school, or in your relationships with others. Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. From my experience in my past relationship with a very close friend and parents, there has been a massive application of adjustment and coping since. The relationship I had with my friend was extremely toxic, filled with dishonesty, manipulation, and emotional abuse that occurred over several years. It wasn’t a relationship I was able to let go of because I had trauma bonded to that person and couldn’t function without him being in my life. It took years of surrounding myself around better people who cared for and valued me as well as seeking professional help in order to be able to take a step back, remove him from my life, and focus on myself. I still have triggers and PTSD from the experience that impact my life from time to time, but I’m able to reason with myself and understand the situation so I don’t fall back into old habits because I’ve learned my self-worth.
