Unit 1 Discussion 1 For this Unit 1 Week 1 Discussion Post, I chose to write about the Assumption 6, which states ‘Unfair and Biased Assessment Procedures Can Be Identified and Reformed’. From the detailed instructions given to us for this discussion post, I would classify this as a 1 on the scale, because as a deaf professor, this is very concerning to me. There are various types of tests used in the educational setting. Examinations are used for a variety of objectives. Some are used to examine different methods of instruction. Other tests are used to observe the students’ analysis of the material. There are a few exams used to test memory and application. For psychological testing, there are more in depth and detailed questionnaires. However, creating a test that is without bias and suitable for every individual in the classroom is a foolhardy task and quite impossible (Cohen, 2021). Without the input of the difference between non-disabled and disabled learners in a course, the emotions and personal feelings of the individual making the testing assessment may be biased without their realizing it. There are good days and bad days for every faculty member of an educational institution, and this may impact the overall fairness of the assessment. It is not depicting a healthy wellbeing of the teacher’s mental state, not to mention, it is not fair to the students who are non-disabled or disabled. The collected data would be skewed, or perhaps have outliers, which would then turn the data into an unusable form. From my experience as a professor, it is important to use multiple different testing methods, as well as test multiple times, to collect data that is constant and consistent. The validity of the data is tantamount to repeating a true and known testing procedure which will lead to the development of development, precision, and accuracy of a skill from the students. Yet, the biggest, and probably most concerning issue, is fairness. Since there are a variety of students in the course, not every individual will be the best at a certain type of testing method, not to mention those who are disabled may already present with disadvantages. Therefore, accommodations will need to be in place for those who need them, as well as the constant differing of assessment types to make it more so fair to others in the classroom. The reason I am looking forward to this course is to learn the best way to present testing materials to disabled learners, and how to improve my teaching. The chapter I look forward to the most is Assessment for Education and Personality. References Cohen, R. J. (2021). Psychological Testing and Assessment (10th ed.).
