PSY 328 Project Two Milestone Template To begin your milestone, you will first select one of the professions from the list provided. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Your responses should each be about 3 to 5 sentences in length. Review the example responses in the assignment guidelines and rubric document to help you get started. Professions : Doctor Nurse Mental health professional Teacher Customer service representative Political figure Business owner Police officer 1. Personality and the Individual A. Identify one trait from the Big Five (openness, also known as intellect/imagination; conscientiousness; extraversion; agreeableness; or neuroticism, also known as emotional stability) of your choice that you think is particularly important for your selected profession and justify your response. One trait from the Big Five I feel is necessary when working as a Mental Health Professional is emotional stability. Emotional stability is needed because you’ll be working with clients who are battling their demons and may not be emotionally stable. If you are not emotionally grounded, you won’t be able to focus on helping those seeking you in the field of mental health. B. Describe whether it would be most ideal for your selected professional to be low, high, or mixed for the Big Five trait you identified for most situations and justify your response. A Mental Health Professional will have to score high on emotional stability. When you are handling clients who are struggling with their emotional stability, it can take a toll on your mental health as well. It can be a very draining experience. However, people who score high in emotional stability can withstand whatever is thrown at them and not have a lasting toll on themselves. Your emotional stability not only affects you but everyone around you. C. Explain whether you think the effectiveness of the Big Five trait you selected depends on the situation . To justify your response, provide a real or imagined example where the trait would benefit the professional and an example where the same trait would not benefit the professional. A mental health professional who scores highly in emotional stability may have numerous things going on in their life and still be able to show up to work and help their clients without allowing their personal life to interfere. Scoring high in emotional stability is essential for a mental health worker to separate 1
from their personal lives and focus on putting others first. A balance is important because many mental health professionals worry more about their clients and not enough about taking care of themselves. 2. Personality and Teams A. Identify another trait from the Big Five for your selected profession and describe how scoring low, high, or mixed on that trait might influence how that professional conducts their work or interacts with others. Another trait a Mental Health Professional would want to have a mixed score on is agreeableness. Mental Health Professionals need to present themselves as warm and friendly to create a comfortable atmosphere for their clients to open up about themselves. However, being too friendly can sometimes give clients the wrong impression. B. Explain whether you think it is better to have a diversity of traits within the same profession or among professionals with the same role or whether it is better for the professionals to exhibit the same traits. Justify your response. I believe it is better to have a diversity of traits within the same profession. Being diverse in a profession allows the professional to be more well-rounded and better equipped for dealing with new and complex situations. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses that can help each other working on a team. 3. Personality, Stress, and Coping A. Describe how you would expect your selected professional to cope with stress using a trait you identified previously or a new trait of your choosing. People who score high in emotional stability can typically handle stress better than those who score lower. I feel that individuals who work in the mental health profession should consider taking time whenever possible to practice “self-care” to rejuvenate themselves which can further allow them to refocus on their job and goals. B. Explain what kind of support you would expect from a person in this profession if you were seeking help or advice. Consider how much emotional intelligence you might expect your selected professional to display. I have been working with mental health professionals for the past 2 years regarding my own mental issues and unresolved trauma. Each of them carried themselves professionally, setting boundaries and not allowing personal issues to interfere with our sessions. They further demonstrated active listening and solely focusing their attention on how I was feeling, dissecting issues, and giving advice. 2
