PSY 328 Module Three Journal Template First, complete the Big Five Personality Test and take a screenshot of your results. Next, complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Identify one trait from the Big Five (openness, also known as intellect/imagination; conscientiousness; extraversion; agreeableness; or neuroticism, also known as emotional stability) that promotes effectiveness in one of the following areas: communication, motivation, or adaptability. You can also speak to an area of your choice. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. Include the following in your response: o Where do you see evidence of this trait in your behaviors? o Explain why you chose your trait and area. I scored an 88 in Intellect/Imagination, otherwise known as Openness, marking it the third-highest trait I have after taking the Big Five Personality Test. I selected this trait because it promotes effectiveness in adaptability allowing me to actively listen to others' concerns and show empathy. Being open helps me be more accepting of diverse perspectives, and cultures, and explore new ideas that can help me improve. Identify one trait from the Big Five that you would like to improve and explain why. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. Consider the following in your response: o Where do you see evidence of this trait in your behaviors? o What behavior would you like to see? I scored a 28 in Emotional Stability and this is one trait I would love to improve. I don’t consider myself the most emotionally stable, my moods switch up a lot and I get stressed when things don’t go as planned. I would like to be emotionally resilient, calm, and even-tempered. Identify one trait from the Big Five that you think helps you cope with challenging situations and provide an example. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. I feel my Intellect/Imagination helps me with challenging situations because of my adaptability. I am able to troubleshoot issues and creatively problem-solve to find resolutions. For example, I recently moved into a new condo and utilized my resources of ribbon and duct tape to secure a dishwasher loop so the water could drain properly because we didn’t have a professional installation. Identify one trait from the Big Five that you think is particularly important for your current or desired profession and justify your response. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. I feel my Intellect/Imagination or Openness is essential for my desired profession of behavioral therapy. The job itself requires active listening and problem-solving to help fulfill the various needs of my clients and that’s a trait I’m skillful in. 1
Your textbook describes which personality traits are most important to employers: conscientiousness followed by agreeableness. Provide one reason why these traits would be desirable in an organizational setting and one reason why they would not. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. Conscientiousness is important in the workplace because managers value goal-oriented individuals and trust them to complete important tasks. Agreeable people can also be excellent team players who are good conflict resolvers. An issue with these traits is that it can be difficult to say ‘no,’ and bypass boundaries that you’ve set for yourself creating an uncomfortable situation. Describe at least one limitation of trait theory when it comes to characterizing a person or their behavior. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. o Consider topics related to social justice issues, such as gender and atavism. One significant limitation of trait theory is its tendency to oversimplify human behavior and personality. It often fails to account for the complexity and variability of human behavior, which can be influenced by a multitude of factors beyond just traits. In the context of social justice issues, trait theory can potentially reinforce harmful stereotypes. Considering that the traits are on a continuum, describe the extent to which you think you can change your traits over time. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. I feel that as I get older my traits will change over time. Several things that may contribute to that would be different events people experience in their lifetime. Perhaps a new job with a different environment, meeting new people, and new experiences can all change my traits with time. Covid is a great example because I went from being someone active and sociable in high school to being more reclusive and independently work-driven when attending college online. 2
