Chapter 6 Writing Assignment Amy Edwards Department of Psychology, Eastern Gateway Community College PSY101: Intro to Psychology Dr. Kristen Jeffries November 12, 2023
2 Chapter 6 Writing Assignment When I think about learning through modeled behavior, according to Bandura, pure behaviorism could not explain why learning can take place in the absence of external reinforcement (Spielman, 2020). He felt that internal mental states must also have a role in learning and that observational learning involves much more than imitation (Spielman, 2020). Bandura identified three kinds of models: live, verbal, and symbolic (Spielman, 2020). This meant that it didn’t just have to be through social cues you pick up from your parents, but could also be through people that are closer to you more on a daily basis. For me, I am gracious enough to have my sped teacher friend model compassionate behavior. The one thing I learned through her by her reacting to me in a time of need was the phrase “How can I help?”. This was not just what do you need but it was a show of empathy and a physical anticipatory act of doing something for someone else without any expectation of something in return. This made me a kinder person that learned what it meant to be a true friend no matter the circumstance. The second modeled behavior I recently learned was from what everyone does when they’re bored or just before bed time and they are ‘doom scrolling’, Tiktok. I learned about what it meant to me to be more confident in myself and how to connect with nature and my true self on a higher level, creating an increased level of confidence. This meant learning tools through grounding, and affirmations to push myself into a mindset that would launch me into knowing that I can do literally anything I put my mind and whole body into, without doubt or fear. Affirmations are statements that we say to ourselves that can shift our mindset and make us feel better about ourselves (Williams, 2021). It also helped me realize that hear is just you doubting the unknown and being able to recognize that.
