Chapter 10 Writing Assignment Amy Edwards Department of Psychology, Eastern Gateway Community College PSY101: Intro to Psychology Dr. Kristen Jeffries November 26, 2023
2 Chapter 10 Writing Assignment When I think about achievement motivation, or the need for achievement and is an important determinant of aspiration, effort, and persistence when an individual expects that his performance will be evaluated in relation to some standard of excellence (Ornelas, 2023), I think of how I achievement was used. When I was young it was ‘make sure you clean your plate so that you grow up big and strong’, and now I have a bad relationship with food. This caused a habit, a pattern of behavior in which we regularly engage (Spielman. 2020), that would cause me to binge on food looking for comfort and appreciation for my “achievement”. I could also recall a time that I was doing really good at a job, so much so that I had other managers speaking with my manager about having me train their team. This was great achievements, but then when I went up for a raise or a promotion to another department I was turned down for ‘not exceeding expectations”. This brings me to my score from the ‘Achievement Motivation Scale’ and how I scored a 16-10: Average need for achievement (Norton, n.d.). I think this resembles my current attitude towards school and work. I am putting only enough into each to make sure I’m doing exactly ‘what I’m supposed to’ or ‘what they pay me for’ because when I do great, I’m handed more without any other praise or compensation. I believe this has led me to self-efficacy, an individual’s belief in their own capability to complete a task (Spielman, 2020), which may include a previous successful completion of the exact task or a similar task, because I am doing exactly what I need to over and over again.
