1 PSY 355 Module 5 discussion post Are microaggressions real or imagined? Discuss the implications of statements such as "You shouldn't take offense" and "Oh stop—you're being too sensitive" on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Microaggression is real. They refer to subtle, often unintentional, verbal or non-verbal actions that convey attitudes that are discriminatory towards groups who are marginalized. These aggressions can lead to hostile or unwelcoming environments, even if they aren’t consciously intended by the individual speaking them (Limbong, 2020). Individuals who engage in microaggressions often do not realize that what they said was racist, homophobic, or sexist. As individuals, we need to be more aware of our biases and how they affect other people. To what extent can we excuse a person's motivation to participate in riots or tendency to bully others when it's an aspect of group behavior? Discuss the implications of group mentality on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Deindividuation occurs when a person becomes so immersed in the norms of a specific group that you lose your own sense of identity (Nickerson, 2022). A nonymity leads to loss of internal restraints, self-identity, and responsibility for our behavior. Conditions that increase anonymity serve to minimize concerns about evaluation by others and weaken normal controls based on guilt, shame, or fear. Due to these factors, we should excuse a person’s motivation to participate in riots or their tendency to bully others when they are so immersed in a group. Racial stereotyping and discrimination are antisocial behaviors. Given the impact of learning on human behavior, what is the first step that a person could take to unlearn discriminatory behavior and adopt a more accepting and inclusive attitude toward all people? The first step a person should take to unlearn discriminatory behavior is to recognize that we all have implicit biases, and that implicit bias can negatively affect clinical interactions and outcomes (OMH, 2020). By recognizing that we all have unconscious biases and being open to talking about them, we can adopt a more accepting and inclusive attitude toward all people.
2 Our conception of bad eggs might inadvertently categorize people into specific social groups. How can we reframe the "bad" in people to view them through a less discriminatory and more inclusive, humanistic lens? Abraham Maslow argued that humans are inherently good, and it’s only when our needs aren’t met that we behave in ways that are considered “bad” (Kitazawa, 2023). If we look deeper, according to Maslow, we will find that most often there are unmet needs of individuals which cause them to be “bad”. Are individuals hungry and that is causing them to steal? Is someone in need of shelter to stay dry and that causes them to break into abandoned buildings? We must look downstream to find what the unmet needs of each “bad egg” since no two people are the same. How does the concept of antisocial behavior apply to any of the following programmatic course themes: o Career connections- When we are working, antisocial behavior can cause multiple issues including creating a hostile environment and affecting output and sense of team. Anti-social behavior can impede communication and building an effective career, as the actions usually involve a lack of respect for peers. o Ethics- Antisocial behavior often implies unethical behaviors, such as manipulation, lying, or causing injury to others. Anti-social behavior can lead to an indifference to ethical standards and norms. References Kitazawa, E. (2023, April 3). Humanistic psychology: Abraham maslow's theory of needs . Shortform Books.
