1 PSY 355 Module 4 Discussion Post For your initial post, review the videos The Stanford Prison Experiment ; The Milgram Experiment, The Heist ; and The Bystander Effect . Then respond to the following: Do the videos suggest that we are aware of our tendency to conform? Do you think that our choices are based on free will, or do expectations about our implied roles guide our choices? I believe that the videos show that we are aware of our tendency to conform. Most people don’t want to be different; they don’t want to stand apart from the group. In the Milgram Experiment, most of those who passed by didn’t stop to help those who were struggling (Brown, 2014). They took their cues from the others around them and once one person stopped to help then more stopped to help. This is akin to panhandlers at intersections. People in cars watch to see if others are giving out anything and feel peer pressure to also donate some loose change if others around them are. I believe most of our choices are based on the expectations of those around us as much as I would prefer to say that it is all free will, Social influence can be so subtle that we often conform to group norms without realizing it. Describe a scenario that demonstrates how a person can conform to norms or obey authority without being aware. Social influence is mighty subtle when it comes to even small things like what our kids pack for snacks at school. I remember always putting an apple or an orange in my kid's lunch box. I didn’t know why as I knew he didn’t like them. I didn’t realize that I was trying to be the same as his friends parent and pack a healthier lunch even though I knew my kid really wanted a bag of chips or fruit snacks. Despite our desire to be ourselves, our behaviors do not always reflect our authentic attitudes. Describe an instance in your life in which you experienced cognitive dissonance. An instance in my life when I experienced cognitive dissonance was when I messed up my knee. I knew I needed to take it easy and back off some of the hard work I was doing, but I didn’t want anyone to think less of me for not pulling my share. Even once I went out and had surgery, I pushed myself to come back and prove myself again. Given the varying influences of social and cultural norms on attitude and behavior, in what ways might our tendency to conform to norms differ across cultures?
2 In a previous job, I called on convenience stores to sell candy. In doing this job, I spoke with many store owners, some locals from our area, and some of other nationalities. When I was speaking to some store leadership, I had to be mindful of the role women play in their customs. Many women worked in these stores, but it was always known that their husband, father, or brother owned the business and was responsible for making all the decisions. I then would walk into a business run by local families or national chains and the women working in these establishments made almost all the decisions about the business. Cultural norms for businesses, even across the road from each other, were different. The diversity of our languages, customs, and expressive behaviors confirms that much of our behavior is socially programmed, not hardwired (Meyers & Twenge, 2021). How do the concepts of dispositional and situational attribution, fundamental attribution error, conformity, cognitive dissonance, obedience, and central and peripheral persuasion routes apply to any of the following programmatic course themes: o Self-care o Social justice o Emotional intelligence o Career connections o Ethics I believe that Emotional intelligence relates to the concepts of dispositional and situational attribution, fundamental attribution error, conformity, cognitive dissonance, obedience, and central and peripheral persuasion routes ( Psychology Course Online , n.d.). I believe that EI relates to these as it’s the practice of self-control and the ability to accurately perceive the emotions of self and others, appropriately adept emotions, and actions in daily interactions, and consistently understand and express interest in the well-being of self and others. EI allows us to process, understand, and feel when exposed to cultural differences. References Brown, D. (2014, October 14). The Milgram Experiment | THE HEIST | Derren Brown [Video].
