1 PSY 355 Module 2 Discussion Post Based on the content in "A Class Divided," are children immune to the attitudes and behaviors of other group members? Explain. Based on the content of “A Class Divided”, children are not immune to the attitudes and behaviors of other group members (FRONTLINE PBS | Official, 2019) . In this documentary, children are told which group is better and suddenly start acting differently towards the other group. Imagine being submerged into a culture day in and day out in which the adults surrounding you treat a group differently because of their skin color or other physical features. In this study, the teacher proved how quickly children were persuaded by adults (the teacher) on why a certain group is better or less than another group. When this experiment started in the morning you could see the resistance in the faces of the kids, but very quickly they were feeding into each other talking down to the other group and trying to keep them oppressed. In what ways might important developmental milestones influence social development in childhood? Developmental milestones influence social development can help children feel confident in building relationships, taking initiatives to get their needs met, expressing how they feel in safe ways, and asking for help when needed (Mi Kids Matter, n.d.). Social development aids in children’s ability to interact with others and regulate their behaviors and emotions. Hitting appropriate milestone goals ensures that children develop appropriate skills to navigate their future steps in life and development. Based on psychological evidence, should antisocial behavior in adulthood be primarily blamed on impaired socialization as a child? If so, what types of interventions might help to remediate these impairments? If not, what do you think leads to adult antisocial behavior? Based on psychological evidence, anti-social behavior in adulthood shouldn’t be primarily blamed on impaired socialization as a child. There has been a shift over the last three decades that shows genetics and environmental factors are major influencers in antisocial behavior (Baker et al., 2006). In studies of twins and adopted children, many studies show genetics play a role in impulse control, risk-taking behaviors, and emotional control. I do believe that there are traumas that do occur in life that lead to anti-social behavior. Child abuse, neglect, and difficult family circumstances can the later development of antisocial behaviors (NHS, 2021).
2 Can you teach children tolerance and inclusiveness if they are already indoctrinated by societal intolerance? What if the children in "A Class Divided" had never had a follow-up class explaining brown eyes as an indicator of the smart people? I believe that children can be taught tolerance and inclusiveness if they have already been indoctrinated by social intolerance, but it is more difficult. Breaking the norms of how a child is raised can take time . Unlearning ingrained behaviors takes focus, love, and above all, time. Had the children involved in “A Class Divided” never had a follow-up class , they would have continued to mistreat the brown-eyed individuals, with behaviors possibly getting worse. It takes a lot to stand up for those who are different, and children are often taught not to disrespect adults when they tell them something is true. How does the concept of development of the social self apply to any of the following programmatic course themes: o Social justice- The development of the social self applies to social justice since we learn that everyone deserves the same rights and access to opportunities. Learning how to apply equality to everyone we cross paths with comes with time . As we evolve as a person, we learn how to create worth, ensure equal rights and opportunities for all, and eliminate inequalities (Commission for Social Justice [CDHN], 1994). o Emotional Intelligence- The development of the social self applies to Emotional Intelligence as we learn how to control our emotional response to situations that we are placed into . With awareness of our own internal biases, we can delve into ourselves and resolve our issues that might cause us to treat others differently than ourselves. References Baker, L.
