1 PSY 355 Module 1 Discussion For your initial post, review the videos Role Strain Versus Role Conflict and Deviance: Crash Course Sociology #18 . Then respond to the following: What are the various levels of your social ecosystem? In what ways have they changed in the past 5 or 10 years? According to Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems theory (Cherry, 2023) , each of us has My innermost circle, my microsystem, which consists of my child (my grandson), my girlfriend of 3 years, and a few close friends who have been by my side for years. My next layer of the social ecosystem, my mesosystem, is that of my coworkers, my boss, school and instructors, and my medical care team (I’ve recently had 3 knee surgeries in 16 months, so I have a great support system of my doctor and a few different therapists). The next level is my exosystem, these are the folks of the community around me that I work with each day. These folks keep me on my toes every day! My macrosystem involves my city of San Antonio and the state of Texas in which I live. These systems have changed in the past 5 years due to divorce and relocation. I’ve lost people who were supposed to be like family to me, but I’ve gained new people in those circles who now love and respect me. This video was helpful to me in learning Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Social Theory (Sprouts, 2022). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6pUQ4EDHeQ If something has changed within your social ecosystem, was it intentional? Or did your social ecosystem change you? I walked away from a 24-year relationship about 5 years ago. I lost family, I lost friends, I lost my place to live, but I kept my kid. This was an intentional change in my ecosystem as I was the one who walked away from a disastrous marriage to save myself. I’ve been in therapy ever since. I started back to college, I started back to the gym, and I’ve started training for my first ever 5k! How have your relationships with specific aspects of your social ecosystem helped to shape your identity?
2 A specific aspect of my social ecosystem that has shaped my identity is that of becoming a student. It's odd how people now look at me when they find out that I am back in school and what I am studying. They are also shocked to find out that I want to go on to get my master's while still working the job that I do. This aspect of my social ecosystem has helped shape my identity because I’m not longer just Z’s grandma or the Merchandiser, but I am now a student who is working on a Psychology degree. People are seeing me in a different light and with more respect than they did before. Do you think people act more based on who they are or based on their group's behavior? Please provide a specific example to support your position. I think that most people act relative to the group they are with. In saying that, as we get older, our groups tend to separate into social ecosystems that align with our core beliefs. A specific example of this was when I was going to get married. I couldn’t do that in my state, so I voiced my issue to an online support group that I am in for older lesbians. This group of women was able to let me know the closest and most accessible place in which to marry. They were able to let me know the rules since we were coming from out of state, and they were able to give me contact information for those individuals we needed. This social ecosystem was able to give me the information that I needed, without judgment, in about 30 minutes. How does the concept of identity and the group apply to any of the following programmatic course themes: o Self-care- The concept of identity and the group applies to the programmatic theme of Self- Care in that as we understand our identity, we can develop a stronger sense of self and improve our self-care practices (Pierce, 2023). Knowing who we are as individuals allows us to find what we need for self-care. Some need water, some need to disconnect and read, some need mindfulness, and some need religion. Each of us is different so the correct self-care is based on everyone. o Social justice Social Justice relates to identity when we speak about oppression and privilege. Social Justice aims to break down the politics that continue discrimination and oppression. Our identity can group us into a class of people who need social justice reform movements. Knowing who we are as individuals can help us fight for social justice reform for all.
3 o Emotional intelligence Emotional intelligence and Identity. How can we work on controlling our own EI? Since Emotional Intelligence is about how we each practice self-control and how we recognize the emotions of others, knowing self is important so that we can understand what exactly is going on in our own minds and bodies. Emotional intelligence is not just an abstract concept. It’s a set of skills, including self- awareness, self-regulation, ethical judgment, empathy, social awareness, and conflict resolution ( Psychology Course Online , n.d.). References Cherry, K.
