Michelle Perez La-304-44 Professor Nassem Psychological disorders of childhood
In the case of dealing with children who are either diagnosed with disorders or the ones who test you just for their own reasons. I believe there are many things to explore and discuss. I would start with first I would say let’s talk about genders. Gender plays a big role in boys learn differently than girls. As we all know the saying that states girls are smarter than boys not true but, in many cases, boys have behavior issues in classrooms or at home because they are expected to move as quickly as a girl child or even as adults. Boys have more behavior issues because they aren’t allowed to use so much of their testosterone at a young age. This causes parents and teachers to say children have ADHD disorders or bad behavior. Now children are at greater risk for violence and criminal behavior, this is what we are exposed to. As far as the children who are medically diagnosed, they have certain issues and behavior problems that can be controlled if treated early. If parents had more resources and support systems, they would know early signs of autism and signs of bipolar or anxiety. A lot of time parents are in denial and take a long time to get their children evaluated by this time doctors have concerning issues. For any parent who has a child who is diagnosed with any mental disorder I suggest doing research. Being supportive attending support groups for yourself and for the child. The more knowledge we have on our children’s mental health the more self-awareness with must deal with certain triggers and behaviors. Things to do at home with your young child that is hyperactive find activities that comfort your child. As a mother to a son, I thought electronics was the solution, but it is not now my son is disconnected from playing. Our new thing to do is having a mother son outing to play. Talking with your children not as if they have an issue but as if they are as normal as anyone else because they are just with different personality traits. If we make our children feel bad about
who they are or how they behave they tend to either suffer from depression or social anxiety. Even as adults we tend to suffer from this issue because we were treated differently as children. Teenagers challenge their parents because they are now growing with hormones. As hormonal changes happen in many households the females start fighting with their mothers more lashing out. I also learned that when parents are way too controlling the female child tends to act out more in school or around the household. I also know when you talk to your teenage child about self-pleasing or masturbation, they are maybe uncomfortable. It is always best to make your children feel safe with you or they will seek the knowledge of others who may use them or maybe even worse things. Also, children who are exposed sexually at a younger age than others have different mindsets that can then cause mental health issues. The safest thing to do at home is make sure your children can speak to you about things. Always guide them the best way you can, I would say keep them busy with sports, gym and school. Other suggestions will be taking your children to therapy, we weren’t taught to go to therapy in our cultures everything is push it other the rug. If you start therapy early, they could heal if they suffered trauma. Coping mechanisms to deal with a child or teenager who is already out of control will be seeking professional advice. Getting family support health providers social worker whatever is needed to get the best care for yourself and your child or children. I have learned that when our children are suffering, we tend to fall into depression. Married couples get divorced during this time as well. It can be very difficult to adjust to and manage. The best treatment or help is knowledge and understanding and taking care of your own mental as a parent.
