1 Self-disclosure and Cultural Competence in Client Interaction Victoria Jones Master of Social Work, Walden University COURSE 6111: SW Practice I Dr. Savvas Georgiades September 10, 2023
2 Self-disclosure and the Ramifications Self-disclosure is when a clinician deliberately or unintentionally discusses personal information about themselves with a patient. It can be as simple as wearing a wedding band, having family photos around the office, or sharing more intimate details about the clinician's past struggles with mental illness, substance abuse, or other social problems. Whether the disclosure is simple or complex, the ramifications could benefit or harm the client depending on the clinician’s reasons for disclosing the information and where the client is in their treatment plan. When handled effectively, a clinician's choice to self-disclose can deepen the therapeutic bond, but if the clinician isn't careful, it can impede progress and divert attention from the client. Clients benefit from clinician self-disclosure in several ways, such as strengthened therapeutic relationships, comfort in sessions, and willingness to divulge. However, excessive, inappropriate, or unnecessary clinician self-disclosure can be ineffective or even backfire ( “Me Too, a Long Time Ago”: Therapist Self-disclosure of Past or Present Psy. . .: @ Walden University Library , n.d.). While working as a high school social worker this previous school year, I was called in to assist a student who had reported that she had recently experienced sexual assault. Naturally, she refused to talk to me or anyone looking to help, including her parents, to whom I was mandated to report the incident. I had to try a different approach that would get her to engage in my efforts to help. In self-disclosure, context is everything. We must assess the current circumstance, the likely effects on the therapeutic alliance, and the likelihood that the disclosure will be beneficial (Szczygiel, 2020b). I asked her to cut on some music, and to her surprise, I knew the song she was playing. Once the song ended, I told her she would be surprised to know how much I can relate to specific students. I told her that although I've never been sexually assaulted, I've gone
3 through many life experiences like homelessness and domestic abuse that most people wouldn't be able to endure. Nevertheless, I can state with certainty that those experiences helped me become mentally and physically stronger, and if she would let me, I'd like to help ensure that she can say the same about herself in the future. I decided to be open and honest with this student about my struggles to establish a rapport based on trust and open communication. As a result, she did open up to me about every part of her life, and ultimately, she felt less alone, and I could better assist her because I decided to self-disclose. Cultural Competency The NASW defines cultural competence as the process through which people and systems respond respectively and effectively to people from different cultural backgrounds, identities, social classes, beliefs, and other diversity factors (Brandell, 2020-04-01, p. 568). Cultural competence is crucial in interactions because it makes our clients feel less alienated and indicates that we value and recognize their worth and dignity. According to the code of ethics, we should be aware of the positive features of various cultures while also comprehending how culture affects human behavior and society ( Social Workers’ Ethical Responsibilities to Clients , n.d.) . For instance, the student mentioned above is Hispanic and spent years in the foster care system before being adopted by a white family. She felt like an outcast, ostracized, and silenced because they did not understand the depth of her upbringing and culture. She also felt they wanted to treat her as a child even though she had to spend most of her childhood like an adult. I spent most of our time together initially, getting to know her personally. I had to learn her triggers, more about her past life before, during, and after foster care, and her cultural background to conceptualize a plan to integrate it into her new family dynamic to establish effective communication with her parents.
