FMST 210 17 September 2023 Week 5 Activity - The Adolescent Brain 1. Decision-making - Planning - Inhibiting inappropriate behaviour - Social interaction - Self awareness 2. For which particular thought processes is the limbic system of the brain responsible? (Write this in point form (bulleted) and do not go over 50 words) - Emotion processing - Reward processing (including taking risks) 3. What is the irony or disconnect related to the levels of functionality of the prefrontal cortex and the limbic system in the adolescent brain ? How does the functionality of these two parts of the adult brain compare? (50-100 words) In comparison to adults, the limbic system is hyper sensitive to the rewarding feeling of risk taking in adolescence. Moreover, the pre-frontal cortex which is a part of the brain that stops us from taking excessive risks is still under development in adolescence where as it is fully developed once they are an adult. The brain is particularly adaptable and malleable in adolescence. While the limbic brain in the adult brain works quickly and is governed by emotion and impulse, the prefrontal cortex works slowly and is rational. 4. What are some likely outcome s (plural) as a result of this disconnect in the adolescent brain? (High risk behaviour is one outcome.) (50-100 words) Oftentimes the disconnect with adolescents that involve habits of heightened risk taking, poor impulse control, and self consciousness reflect that the pre-frontal cortex has not reached a point of incomplete development. However, these disconnections can also provide a positive outcome as it is an excellent opportunity for education and social development as the adolescent brain undergoes profound development suggesting the implications to education, for rehabilitation, as well as intervention.
