2 Emotional intelligence over cognitive intelligence From the following statement, "Emotional intelligence is more important than cognitive intelligence in influencing an individual's success." I agree . According to Dam and Marcus (2019), The role of cognitive intelligence (IQ) in determining academic and professional achievement has been generally accepted. However, current studies propose that emotional intelligence (EI) may have an equally, if not more, significant impact on predicting general success in different areas of life and work because emotional intelligence applies to having the ability to perceive, comprehend, control, and use emotions to success in working in teams (p.178). For example, while cognitive intelligence facilitates problem-solving and memorization, emotional intelligence allows individuals to successfully control and manage how they feel, as well as the feelings of others, under complex social contexts. The capacity to adjust, communicate clearly, and collaborate within a team is essential in today's professional environment, which is characterized by rapid change and interdependence (Dulewicz & Higgs, 2000). People with high emotional intelligence (EI) show a notable ability to adapt to new situations quickly, exhibit empathy and respect for different points of view, and thus develop stronger relationships with others ( Houston, 2019). Also, those with a high level of cognitive intelligence may generate a technically ideal solution. In contrast, someone with high emotional intelligence would consider the emotional impacts of such a decision. As a personal example, I once worked on a team project where one member was smart regarding cognitive skills. She could process information rapidly and come up with innovative solutions. However, she had low patience, and it was challenging to deal with her frustration and
3 talk to her because she wanted to finish as soon as possible without listening to other opinions, which was frustrating for all the team members. On the other hand, my coworker had remarkable emotional intelligence, and when the tensions were high between everyone, she navigated the situation with empathy, understanding, and effective communication. She was often the connection between the person with cognitive skills and the rest of the team; in that way, she ensured the project's success. References Dam, N. V., & Marcus, J. (2019).
