FMST 210 1 October 2023 Week 4 Activity - Childhood Trauma 1. Describe what Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are and how they are related to high- risk behaviour. (100-150 words) The goal of the ACEs study was to better understand the history of adults and how early exposure to adversity affects children's developing bodies and brains. These early adversities include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, mental illness, substance abuse, incarceration, and parent separation etc. The nucleus accumbens, the brain's pleasure and reward centre, is one of the regions affected by this exposure and is linked to substance dependence. Additionally, ACEs block the pre-frontal cortex, which is important for learning and required for impulse control and executive function. Finally, the Amygdala (the brain's hub for fear reaction) shows detectable alterations on MRI scans. Therefore, people who experience significant levels of adversity are more prone to engage in high-risk activity for true neurobiological reasons. The single biggest unaddressed public health problem facing our country now is adverse childhood experiences. 2. Describe in your own words (meaning do not simply quote Dr. Burke), including key terminology, what happens to the body during the fight-or-flight response. (50-100 words) The process is domino like as it begins with the hypothalamus, which then transmits a signal to our pituitary, which then sends a signal to the adrenal gland, which releases stress chemicals such as cortisol and adrenaline. In response, our bodies raise our heart rates, enlarge our pupils, and widen our airways, granting us the ability to either fight or flee from what they perceive to be a stressful contact or circumstance. 3. What are the likely outcomes for a child who repeatedly experiences the fight-or-flight response? (50-100 words) Children's maturing bodies and minds make them more vulnerable to this responsive stress activation. Because adversity in high doses affects not only brain development and function but also the immune system, hormone systems, and how our DNA is read and transcribed makes it so that children are more prone to acquire heart disease or cancer even if they don't engage in any high-risk behaviours because the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis is more regularly engaged with. Given the changes to their immunological and hormonal systems, children require rigorous therapy to prevent them from experiencing prolonging health issues as an adult.
