1 PRACTICE TOOLBOX: ADOLESCENT ASSESSMENT Victoria Jones Master of Social Work, Walden University COURSE 6111: Advanced SW Practice I Dr. Savvas D Georgiades September 21, 2023
2 PRACTICE TOOLBOX: ADOLESCENT ASSESSMENT Clinicians in the mental health field use various assessment tools to identify, treat, and gauge the severity of clients' mental health disorders. Clients can provide more context and details about their life experiences and mental health status through these assessments, enabling the clinician to decide on a treatment plan for those clients. I selected the assessment tool of Severity Measure for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (Children Age 11-17) because anxiety is on the rise in adolescent youth and has sometimes gone unnoticed, especially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric conditions in children and adolescents, they are frequently underdiagnosed and untreated in this population (Mossman, 2017). However, using this tool decreases the number of adolescents who receive an inadequate diagnosis. Additionally, this tool assesses the frequency of the anxiety felt, which helps to build an effective treatment plan. Why the Severity Measure for Generalized Anxiety Disorder is Useful for Adolescents This tool is beneficial for adolescents because it clarifies some of the symptoms the child is experiencing when answering questions for the assessment. Explaining the symptoms to the child can give them a sense of empowerment and a better sense of control over their identity and behavior. A critical piece in assessment is to assess how much control clients feel they have over their behaviors. (Brandell, 2020-04-01, p. 125). Given their attention span and memory, using this tool with adolescents is also beneficial because it is a brief and straightforward self-reporting system that only asks the client to recall the last seven days instead of a lengthy period. Possible Limitations and Pitfalls When Using This Assessment Tool A limitation of this tool is that some adolescents struggle to fit in with their peers and are perfectionists, which makes them hesitant to provide honest answers to the assessment for fear of
3 being labeled or judged. This holds true even for clients who genuinely do not have anxiety, as they might give inaccurate responses and receive a misdiagnosis because the questions are superficial and do not account for any other factors. Another limitation of the Severity Measure is that, while it can give information on the symptoms' severity, it does not offer an exhaustive picture of the underlying causes of the anxiety.
