1 Practice Toolbox: Examining Dialectical Behavior Therapy as a Childhood Intervention Victoria Jones Master of Social Work, Walden University COURSE 6011: Advanced SW Practice I Dr. Savvas D Georgiades October 10, 2023
2 Practice Toolbox: Examining Dialectical Behavior Therapy as a Childhood Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a well-established therapeutic approach that blends cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness and acceptance strategies to teach emotion regulation skills, making it appropriate for children (Brandell, 2020, p. 130). Cognitive- behavioral techniques assist in recognizing and altering negative thought patterns and behaviors, while mindfulness encourages non-judgmental observation of thoughts and emotions. I selected DBT as an intervention for children because it effectively addresses emotional dysregulation, self-destructive behaviors, and interpersonal conflicts commonly encountered by children as they mature and develop socially and emotionally. I also selected DBT because it uses age- appropriate materials and modified techniques that align with a child's emotional developmental stage. It incorporates engaging activities like games, art, or play therapy to teach emotion regulation skills. Furthermore, I selected this intervention because it helps children establish non- judgmental coping skills and align with their ideal selves (Brandell, 2020, P. 130). Benefits of Using DBT with Children DBT offers several benefits when used with children, particularly in addressing emotional dysregulation, self-destructive behaviors, and conflicts with others. It teaches them strategies to identify and regulate their emotions effectively, improving mood stability and reducing the risk of self-harm. This approach is valuable for children with intense emotional reactivity, such as mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder, a history of trauma, or self-harming behaviors, to learn to regulate their emotions (Child DBT, 2022). Moreover, DBT enhances psychosocial efficiency by improving social skills and fostering healthier relationships with peers and family members. It also teaches distress tolerance skills, enabling them to cope with stressful situations without resorting to self-destructive behaviors, ultimately assisting in
3 crisis management and reducing impulsive behaviors. Finally, DBT incorporates mindfulness techniques that enhance children's self-awareness, concentration, and emotional regulation, leading to lasting psychological benefits that empower children to effectively manage their emotions throughout their lives, contributing to improved mental health outcomes, enhanced self-esteem, better peer relationships, improved family dynamics and an overall sense of well- being. Challenges or Limitations of Using DBT with Children While DBT can be tailored for children, it may be less effective for young children due to their limited cognitive and emotional development, requiring modifications and age-appropriate materials (Perepletchikova et al., 2010). Young children may struggle to comprehend the complex skills and concepts involved in DBT, which could impact the effectiveness of their therapeutic progress. Additionally, the longer-term approach of DBT may make engaging children who prefer shorter interventions difficult, requiring therapists to creatively address motivation and consistency issues. Therefore, therapists must employ creative and developmentally appropriate strategies to communicate effectively with children during DBT sessions.
