By age 40, 50% of population will have experienced mental illness. Very problematic issue Personal suffering and suffering of friends and family. Stigma and discrimination. Suicide risk. In 1998, cost of mental illness for healthcare system $8 billion ($5 billion care, $3 billion in disability and early death). Intervention Intervening in mental health problems and mental disorders Processes – what do we do? Outcomes – does it work? à Specifically, focused on psychotherapy.
