Unit 9 Discussion 1 Disabled students who attend college often may have trouble making decisions due to the disability at hand. Goldstein (2018) states that decisions are based upon judgements which infer to different reasoning processes of the mind. Emotional qualities have been linked to decision- making, which can have a positive outcome or negative consequences based upon the individual’s personality (Goldstein, 2018). Neuroeconomics combines the studies of psychology, economics, and neuroscience to provide a perspective on how brain function influences decision- making, dependent upon if there is a gain or a loss involved (Goldstein, 2018). Individuals with a more positive or optimistic viewpoint tend to ignore negative information or pessimistic viewpoints, which may cause them to decide based upon incomplete information or lack of knowledge. Individuals who tend to be more so pessimistic, or more cautious in decision-making usually avoid risk taking behavior and stick to what is known. As a professor, it is my job to lecture upon subjects and teach my students new material to learn. However, some of my learners with a disability may have trouble retaining information, thus impacting the ability to decide during an assignment, examination, or laboratory exercise. Students with learning disabilities were shown to be more patient when deciding than those without learning disabilities since these individuals have put in more effort to overcome their learning deficits (Elisha et al., 2022). So, when considering the type of disability my student has, I have to understand that certain accommodations might be needed to aid them in their succeed, such as extended timing for tests and assessments. References Elisha, D., Rosenboim, M., & Krisi, M. (2022). How do specific learning disabilities affect time and risk preferences of college students? Unit 9 Discussion 2 Inductive reasoning is what we use to make decisions based upon past experiences, both positive and negative. Since inductive reasoning is so common, it is a usual occurrence in everyday life. So, our behaviors and choices for the present or the future are influenced by the past. For example, in my profession, if a student does poorly on the first examination, then this is a learning experience. Something will have to change for improvement to occur, such as studying more and time management with other subjects. If a student uses inductive reasoning, he/she/they will recall doing poorly on the first test, and strive to do better on the second by changing whatever bad habit or study method used for the first exam. Heuristics aid us in reaching a conclusion faster when the situation does not have time to be fully assessed (Goldstein, 2018). It is a type of shortcut which helps us make rapid decisions. The
availability heuristic, also known as the availability bias, is a type of shortcut used to recall information of supposed importance that come to mind when evaluating a situation, a subject, or a decision. Thusly, the information more easily recalled is supposedly more important than that not so easily recalled. Sometimes, this leads to errors due to creating illusory correlations, which make a relationship between two events appear to exist, but there is none or a very weak link, rather than the strong connection there is thought to be (Goldstein, 2018). Unfortunately, illusory correlations can lead to harmful stereotypes, bias, and negative outlooks. References Goldstein, E. B. (2018).
