Emily Hicks Module 5 Reflective journal Instructor Banks PSY 240 Adolescents' use of social media has become more prevalent, with both beneficial and negative effects on their mental health. It is important to examine the factors that impact this relationship, such as cyberbullying, fear of missing out (FOMO), negative body image, sleep problems, addiction, comparison, and self-esteem. Children, parents, and instructors must be informed of the consequences of adolescent and teen social media usage. Social media platforms provide opportunities for cyberbullying among adolescents. Some experience online harassment, which can lead to low self-esteem and depression. Developing a fear of missing out during adolescence is usually led by constant exposure to others’ lives on social media. This fear can contribute to feeling lonely and having low self-worth. Social media pictures that uphold unrealistic beauty standards may harm adolescents' perceptions of their bodies. Teenagers' view of beauty is skewed because they are bombarded with photoshopped and filtered pictures of perfect bodies. Body dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and a poor sense of self may all result from feeling pressured to comply with these ideals. Adolescents' self-esteem might take a serious hit if they are constantly comparing themselves to others and concluding that their bodies do not measure up. Social media sites are made to be interesting and addicting, with features like alerts, likes, and comments that cause the brain to release dopamine. Teenagers may become addicted to their online presence, constantly looking for recognition and social acceptance. Addressing these issues can reduce the negative impact of social media on adolescent mental health and promote overall well-being.
