Unit 7 Discussion 1 As an avid Star Trek fan, this discussion surely did provoke some thought for me. My two favorite characters were Spock and Data and I always loved hearing their logic, for some of it I found highly amusing. Though, since this discussion is focusing on the planet Vulcan and Spock, I had to really think about the differences between humans and Vulcans, not only in a cultural aspect but emotional as well. According to Goldstein (2018), language is a communication system which is comprised of sounds, symbols, or gestures that enables us to express ourselves. Language enables us to express how we feel, share our thoughts, come up with ideas, and discuss experiences. Language is also used to share emotions, such as joy, sorrow, anger, fear, and many others, which follow behavioral and physiological responses. With the Vulcan culture, emphasis is placed on logic and seeing that emotions could possibly elicit an illogical response, their culture tends to avoid using emotion in everyday life that could impact decisions negatively. However, this is to say that they do not feel emotions. In Star Trek, Sarek, Spock’s father initially told him it was the logical choice to marry a human because of political relations. Then later, he admits there was another reason and that was because he loved Spock’s mother, Amanda. To say that Vulcans do not have emotions, I think, is incorrect because they are capable of feeling, but chose not to rely on emotions to make decisions. References Goldstein, E. B. (2018).
