Unit 1 Discussion 1 Cognitive and emotional thought processes might be viewed as similar in some circumstances and different in others. I believe both may apply, dependent upon the situation and the individual. Emotions affect the way a person might think or react when presented with a certain situation, which may present with positive or negative feelings. Cognitive processes, in turn, may be influenced by emotions if the way thinking or reacting alters a particular rational manner from the individual. Cognitive psychology is defined as the mind reacting or thinking and how it functions to serve us in the surrounding environment (Goldstein, 2018). Yet, some argue that emotions and cognitive thought processes should be kept separate, for sometimes emotions can land us in difficult situations instead of looking at the situation rationally and calmly. Feelings are part of our emotional process of the mind. Each emotion has a particular situation in which the individual might feel a variety of sensations such as joy, sorrow, anger, or fear. Emotions may cause facial reactions, physiological reactions, and behavioral reactions according to the surrounding environment (Lindquist et al., 2008). Each individual may react or have a differing emotion dependent upon the circumstance. Emotions may affect our cognitive thinking abilities as well. References Goldstein, E. B. (2018). Decisions, reactions, and thought processes may be influenced by an individual’s concept of nature and nurture when pertaining to the surrounding environment. Taking cognitive neuroscience into consideration, Goldstein (2018) speaks of how it is important to learn more about physiological thoughts and behaviors in differing environments and how there may be similarities and differences between nature and nurture. Genetics play a role in thoughts, reactions, and behaviors when it pertains to individuals in varying environments. Every person thinks, reacts, and displays a certain behavior depending on the situation. Therefore, dependent upon a person’s genetics, the level of intensity or process of cognitive thought may differ (Collins et al., 2000). Nature or nurture may trigger various reactions, thoughts, or behaviors from the surrounding environment with ties to genetics, cognitive processes, and affective processes. References
