Unit 4 Discussion 1 The video about how Clive Wearing lost his memories was thought provoking, but mostly proved the point of how horrible it would be to lose one’s mind. Memories make a person unique and presents with a sense of identity from experiences which are recalled throughout a lifetime, both old and new in the making. In the video, Life Without Memory (2022), Clive felt as if he was waking up after a long sleep without any recollection of how much time had passed or events that had occurred. This caused Clive frustration while it caused his family despair. After watching the video concerning Clive Wearing and his lost memories, I thought of dementia patients who I previously worked with during my time as a researcher before I became a professor. Sometimes, a glimpse of the person who was there before the sickness would come through for a moment, before vanishing once more. Without the capability to remember, human beings would be joyless and unable to be independent as individuals. Personally, I think of my grandmother who is suffering from dementia. Most of her memories that are lost are short-term, like she cannot recall what she ate for breakfast or what day it is. At least, she still possesses most of her long-term memory, and recalls who I am or recipes she used to make as a cook. According to Goldstein (2018), memory is the holding of information for either short periods, called short-term or working memory, or holding information for long periods, called long-term memory. These recollections are brought forth to mind when a past experience has an impact on a present or future experience. As far as my profession goes, there have been students who have had memories impaired by severe depression. This makes studying difficult, especially when it is time to apply knowledge on examinations. I usually meet with these students to help review material and identify which pieces of material that the individual struggles with in my class. References Goldstein, E. B. (2018). Cognitive psychology: Connecting mind, research, and everyday experience (Vitalsource, 5th ed.). Cengage Limited. Unit 4 Discussion 2 A phenomenon called misinformation is an occurrence of when individuals’ memories are altered by misleading, untrue, or biased information (Loftus, 2003). These false memories may be reinforced by certain emotions during or leading up to the actual event, which alter the overall perception of the true event (Goldstein, 2018). As far as how this may apply to my profession as a biological science professor, many college students I teach have a disability of some type, whether it be mental or physical. The learners who have severe depression often suffer from memory impairments which impact studying habits and retaining knowledge for their classes in a negative manner (Burt et al., 1995). The college students who I have taught who suffer from depression often need accommodations in the classroom and more one-on-one review. I have learned that sometimes the false memory is something as simple as getting the number of lobes on the lungs confused simply because the image viewed was mirrored on the PowerPoint presentation slide. Other times, it may be a recollection as false as someone with Type I diabetes
can somehow manage to survive without insulin as long as there is a lifestyle change. I try to help these students by meeting with them during office hours and providing the best possible accommodations within my power. References Burt, D. B., Zembar, M. J., & Niederehe, G. (1995).
