Emily Hicks PSY 240 Word Count-326 Impacting self-esteem during middle childhood During middle childhood, several risk factors can impact a child’s self-esteem. Some of these risk factors include social comparison, locus of control, learned helplessness, rejection and exclusion, obesity, screen time, and cyberbullying. Social comparison refers to individuals who tend to compare themselves to others. In middle childhood, children may compare themselves to their peers in ways, such as academic performance, physical appearance, and social skills. Children need to understand that everyone has different academic strengths, and it is more important to focus on personal growth. Screen time can play a huge role in a child's self- esteem by comparing themselves to other individuals on social media or websites. Locus of control refers to individuals who believe they have control over life events. “Children’s external locus of control has been linked to a wide variety of negative academic achievement, personality, and social adjustment outcomes.” (Nowicki,2023) On the other hand, individuals with an internal locus of control, believing that they have control over their actions and outcomes, tend to have higher self-esteem. Learned helplessness occurs when children experience failure and believe they have no control over their abilities. Rejection and exclusion can lead to the child feeling lonely and having low self-worth. Promoting social interactions and teaching empathy can help reduce negative impacts. All children should understand acceptance. Obesity can have negative effects on self-esteem. In the world we live in today, you are judged for just about anything. Children who are obese may face teasing and bullying. Encouraging
your child to have body positivity and teaching children to value themselves in all parts of life Cyberbullying refers to the use of technology to bully and harass individuals. Children who experience cyberbullying may have a result in low self-esteem. To help improve a child's self- esteem, they will need positive reinforcement, a supportive environment, acknowledging strengths, and seeking professional help. By understanding risk factors and utilizing appropriate resources, caregivers, parents, and educators play a major role in promoting healthy self- esteem.
