Emily Hicks Word Count-309 PSY 240 Shaken Baby Syndrome Child abuse takes the form of "shaken baby syndrome." In-depth, it is a brain injury brought on by severely shaking an infant or toddler. A negative outcome of this could lead to "speech and learning disabilities, behavioral problems, blindness, seizures, and paralysis." (PBS Valley, 2009) In extreme instances, this could even be fatal. The brain is bouncing back and forth when a youngster is shaken. Shaken baby syndrome happens when a parent or other caregiver loses patience with the infant's sobbing. The Adams statute, which "raises sentencing standards for anyone who abuses a child under the age of eight and causes permit injury or disability," might result in jail time for the parent or caregiver. Most of the time, parents or other adults who are responsible for the child will try to calm a wailing baby out of frustration. Most caregivers are ignorant of Shaken Baby Syndrome and are unaware of the harm they have done or could inflict. Infants have large heads, and their neck muscles are still developing. When a youngster is shaken out of anger, the damage is far more severe than if they tumble and fall. By being forced, the head injury is far more severe and could result in the child's death. In any case, it is never appropriate to vent frustration or wrath on a young child. Parenthood has obstacles, particularly for new mothers. Because they may be dealing with their own aggressiveness, anxiety, and depression, adults who lack parenting skills put their children at greater risk. Unrealistic expectations of babies, young or single parenthood, stress, domestic violence, alcohol or drug abuse, depression, and a history of child maltreatment may increase the likelihood that parents or caregivers will shake a baby violently and result in shaken baby syndrome.
