PSYC 235 Winter 2021 Kareem Khalidi #40159894 In the News Assignment #2 Chapter 12: Trauma-and stressor-related disorders (page 420) Brief description of the article: The article by CBC news, with the title of Children's mental health could be 'significantly' affected by pandemic, study warns , explores the issue of Post-traumatic stress disorder or (PTSD) on Canadian children during Covid-19. The article tackles how PTSD can develop from previous mental health issues in children and why it is an extremely crucial issue in the British Columbia community during this pandemic. It contains interesting information of how the pandemic has limited account a smaller number of resources for the children that have mental health issues and why it can lead to more mental health problems such as PTSD. In addition, the discussion is made that other variables such as racism, especially for Asian-Canadian children, have been generated due to the pandemic that can also lead to PTSD. Brief summary linking the article to textbook chapter: In page 421 of the textbook, it states “children who display PTSD-related symptoms may have experienced lower-magnitude but still highly stressful events such as parental conflict, maltreatment, or community violence that overwhelm their coping abilities. This statement can be linked to the article as the article explores how the pandemic has revealed the harsh affects it had on their parents and the whole community. Parents who developed financial problems and the community who became hateful towards the Asian community in British Columbia, had a significant impact on the children in a negative way. The children had to witness first-hand all the negative things that arose from the pandemic. Critical discussion: The article has confirmed many things that are included in the textbook chapter. It has confirmed that community violence has a significant impact on how children develop PTSD. The article states, Racism is also likely to contribute to COVID-19 having a disproportionate impact on mental health, noting the flare in anti-Asian racism seen across the province since the virus began to spread. This statement clearly shows how the hate towards Asians that arose from the pandemic has a significant impact on mental health. This
PSYC 235 Winter 2021 issue has revealed plenty of negative things to the Asian children of British Columbia. The exposure of this community break- down can cause children to develop PTSD in their future. The article also compliments how parental financial problems and conflict can trigger PTSD for children in the future. Kids also pick up on tension at home if their parents are facing job losses or juggling the responsibilities of parenting and working remotely. This statement from the article shows how exposure to certain stress from their parents can impact on children mental health. The quote confirms that the information in the textbook about parental conflict can lead to PTSD as children. Children can pick up the tension in their household and with having to quarantine with their parents for a long period of time can be extremely traumatic to children and can cause future problems for them. We can implement mental health care to this issue by having virtual care sessions to children in a low-income family or Asian children who are exposed to bullying and racism. These sessions can make sure that the child can go through escapism while their family is struggling to juggle taking care of work and their son/daughter, in addition, going through bullying or racism in their community. Personal reaction to the article: The article has opened my eyes to how the British Columbia children have been affected by the pandemic and how it can lead to PTSD. I did not have any knowledge about the racism and bullying Asian children have been getting in their communities. It made me think in a different about the pandemic as I have everything that I need to combat covid-19, however, there are many children who struggle and have limited resources due to their surroundings. I failed to acknowledge how each community has been impacted and how it can cause future mental health problems such as PTSD. References: 1. . Mash, Eric, and David Wolfe.
