Ethics of Religion (Obj. 7.1 and 7.2) 02/04/2024 Janay Carter PSY-510 Ethics of Religion (Obj. 7.1 and 7.2) When you mix religion and therapy, the ethical implications of implementing religion or spirituality into therapy can easily be a good thing or seen as terrible thing but are manifold. While religion or spirituality can be useful and meaningful to some clients, it can also be the opposite which can also create ethical challenges for therapists and even clients. There are the following four key ethical considerations involved when using religion or spirituality in therapy. When it comes to the Christian worldview on ethical decisions such as creation, love, scripture, and service. The Christian worldview can influence ethical decision-making by emphasizing important principles such as human dignity, love, service, the Bible as the
source of guidance, and living a good and faithful life. These principles guide ethical decisions in ways that bring honor to God while promoting human flourishing. Competence and its ethical implications when it come to religion and or spirituality Therapists have an ethical duty to incorporate religion or spirituality into therapy only if they have the necessary knowledge, training, and experience in that area to do some. Therapists should not offer religious or spiritual interventions that are outside of their scope of practice, especially if they do not have the proper training or knowledge to do so due to ethical standards. Informed consent is as important for therapists to obtain informed consent from their clients before they should integrate religion and or spirituality into therapy. Clients must and should be informed about the potential risks and the benefits of incorporating these elements into their treatment and could ask questions and express any concerns that they may have and feel when it comes to this situation. Imposing religious values in therapy can present many different ethical concerns that can potentially hinder and disrupt one's therapeutic process. Autonomy which is Pressuring clients to adopt beliefs that do not align with their Respect for Diversity Imposing religious values can also have clients question their own and even possibly neglect the client's unique perspective and cultural background. Non-discrimination therapy should stay clear and be free from bias based on religion or spirituality, as imposing beliefs could harm the client- therapist relationship. Professional Boundaries Therapists must always keep professional
boundaries and avoid imposing their own beliefs on clients, as blurring these lines can be very damaging and damaging to trust. Support. Engaging in multiple relationships in therapy, where a therapist is connected to a client outside of the therapeutic setting, can be seen and viewed as unprofessional and unethical due to potential harm to one's therapeutic process. Key ethical concerns are seen as boundary crossing, power imbalances, conflicts of interest, compromise keeping things confidential, and potential harm to their client's well-being. To support ethical practice and protect clients, therapists should uphold and have clear boundaries, by avoiding multiple relationships, prioritizing their client well-being, and adhering to professional standards. In the Christian worldview, they emphasize the importance of stewardship and responsibility in aspects of life, which is included in therapy. Christian therapists like to use their views and tie them in with some sessions as some may call it to use their skills and abilities by seeking wisdom and guidance from God. To act with integrity and honesty, following these ethical guidelines, they can continue their education and seek supervision when needed. Christian therapists can ensure they are acting competently in their practice.
