How should our awareness of developmental theories guide our work as administrators? “Theories of cognitive development that describe how children learn, and theories that explore children’s social and emotional development, are essential components of early childhood educators’ professional knowledge. They have guided the field’s thinking about what we believe children ought to know and be able to do and how we teach” ( Freeman, Decker, & Decker 2018). Let's consider the awareness of Erik Erikson's psychosocial development theory. “It describes how social experiences shape individuals’ personality and influence their mental health. Erikson identified eight stages: each of which involves a conflict that marks a developmental turning point” ( Freeman, Decker, & Decker 2018). As an administrator, understanding this theory can guide leader’s approach to employee and team development. Erikson's stages highlight the importance of addressing different psychosocial challenges at various life stages. For instance, recognizing that employees in their mid-career may be focused on generativity versus stagnation can guide administrators to offer opportunities for mentorship, skill-building, and contributing to the organization's success, fostering a positive work environment. How should theory influence the implementation of quality programming as an administrator? The influence of Jean Piaget's cognitive development theory. Piaget emphasizes the importance of adapting educational strategies to match a learner's cognitive developmental stage. As an administrator, incorporating Piaget's theory into programming means tailoring training, workshops, and professional development to align with the cognitive abilities and learning styles of employees. This can enhance engagement, comprehension, and retention of information, ultimately contributing to the overall quality of the programming.
Which theory most influences your personal view of leadership and/or what you have come to value as an educator? Democratic or participative leadership theory greatly influences my personal view of leadership as an educator. This theory emphasizes the importance of involving team members or stakeholders in the decision-making process, seeking their input, and valuing their contributions to achieving common goals. As an educator, I believe in creating an inclusive and collaborative learning environment where students, teachers, parents, and community members are actively engaged in shaping the educational experience. I believe in empowering students to take ownership of their learning journey by involving them in decision-making processes related to classroom activities, projects, and assessments. By encouraging student voice and choice, I aim to foster a sense of responsibility, autonomy, and intrinsic motivation among learners. Explain one developmental theory or aspect of one theory that is not mentioned in the book. Discuss why this additional information is important for managers/administrators when considering program quality. One developmental theory that is not mentioned in the book but is important for managers/administrators to consider when evaluating program quality is Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of moral development. Kohlberg's theory suggests that moral reasoning evolves through a series of stages, progressing from a focus on self-interest and obedience to authority (pre- conventional morality) to an understanding of social norms and principles of justice (conventional morality) and ultimately to a commitment to universal ethical principles (post- conventional morality). Kohlberg's theory emphasizes the role of social interactions and experiences in shaping moral development. Administrators can create a learning environment that
fosters empathy, cooperation, and respect for others, providing children with opportunities to practice moral reasoning and ethical behavior in real-life situations. “ Moral dilemmas can help determine which level of moral development a person is experiencing. By presenting people with moral decision-making tasks, psychologists can assess where individuals fall in the six stages of Kohlberg's moral developmental stages” (Main, 2023). Administrators play a critical role in modeling ethical behavior and decision-making for students and staff. By demonstrating integrity, fairness, and respect in their interactions with others, administrators can cultivate a culture of ethical leadership within the school community, setting a positive example for students and empowering them to become responsible and ethical citizens.
