A. Read Text 2 , "The Importance of Observation," (pp 1-11) 1. What do we learn about children through observation? We learn about children through observation. We learn about their interests and preferences, their levels of cognitive and social development, their strategies for creating desired effects, their skills and accomplishments, and their personalities and temperaments (Forman & Hall, 2005, p.2). 2. What do we need to know about children to better understand their thinking? We need to consider children’s thoughts about their circumstances/situations to better understand their thinking. Adults should focus on wording things in ways that will not discourage a child or invalidate their feelings. 3. What is meant by meta-cognition? How can you apply this concept to your teaching? Meta-cognition is thinking about someone else’s thinking. I can apply this concept to teaching by being mindful of my students' thinking when speaking to them and trying to gain insight about their thought process. I would speak with language/tone that they understand and feel comfortable with. B . Read Text 3 , "how to write a case study" 1. What are the components of a case study ? The components of a case study are discussing benefits and limitations, finding data, collecting information about a case’s history and choosing a treatment plan. 2. What is the importance of a case study in the diagnosis of special needs? Case studies are important in the diagnosis of special needs because every aspect about how a child’s disability impacts their learning will be taken into account when writing their IEP (treatment plan) which will determine how they will be accommodated throughout their entire educational history.
