Explain your recommendation to the evaluation and IEP teams for Henry’s placement (LRE) based on the evaluation results. Compose a strong and well-written rationale supporting your decision. o Align and support your decisions with specific data from the Henry Evaluation Report Download Henry Evaluation Report . o Discuss how this placement will foster educational success. Use scholarly literature to support your statements and responses. o Refer to the Writing Center’s APA: Citing Within Your Paper Links to an external site. guide and the Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources Links to an external site. table if you need a refresher. Henry came into our classroom three weeks after the start of the year. We could not get any information about his learning from his prior school. We evaluated Henry since he struggles with reading, and his parents had some concerns. After this evaluation, Mr. Franklin and I sat down to discuss the findings and what we think he could use in his individualized education plan (IEP). After talking, Mr. Franklin and I would guess that Henry has Dyslexia or some other type of learning disorder. During the evaluation periods, Henry would read aloud but could not decode each word. The Mayo Clinic (2022) states that dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding) (p.1). Before labeling him with dyslexia we would like to have him take the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills (TVPS) to make sure that he does not have a visual processing disorder that “affects the brain’s ability to process and make sense of information coming from a person’s eyes” (Alliance of Children Rights, 2018, pg.10). There are particular criteria that children need to meet to be eligible for special education due to a specified learning disorder. According to the Alliance for Children’s Rights (2018), you must determine cognitive ability and academic achievement and then find a severe discrepancy and a processing disorder (pg.10). Cognitive ability is measured through standardized assessments. According to Henry’s evaluation, he was tested using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), which is a common assessment of cognitive ability (Alliance for Children’s Rights, 2018, pg. 10). Academic achievement is determined by measuring skills in reading, writing, and math on standard assessments. This was tested during Henry’s evaluation using the Woodcock-Johnson test of achievement. I believe that Henry would do best in a general education setting with goals and adjustments put in place to help him. He is not disruptive or misbehaving, so I do not think he would benefit from a special education classroom. We would like visual aids to help him learn words and word sounds. I believe he would also benefit from hearing the stories we are reading while following along. This can help him to match a word to the sound of the word. I also think that he will benefit from having speech therapy at school, alongside the outside tutoring that he is getting.
Question to the classroom: What are some ways to adjust the teaching so that you can help Henry learn at the same time as the other children? Would you request any other aides or changes for the classroom? References Alliance for Children’s Rights, (2018). Special Education Eligibility Checklist.
