Domestic violence and early childhood trauma can have significant effects on individuals' lives. These experiences can affect a person's physical, mental, and emotional health, as well as their relationships, self-worth, and stress management. For example, a person who experiences domestic violence may suffer from physical injuries and emotional and psychological trauma. This was evident in the women who engaged in prostitution in the movie. Every day they are out on the street, they are at constant risk of getting violence inflicted on them, and or death. They may also experience psychological trauma such as depression, fear, anxiety, and PTSD. This trauma can affect their relationships and self-esteem, making it difficult for them to trust others and feel safe in partnerships. Due to this trauma, domestic violence survivors may turn to illicit drugs as a coping mechanism, and may even have thought of suicide. The high schoolers in this movie shared that they were molested and raped at the ages of 9 to 14. Early childhood trauma can also have long-term consequences, disrupting development and impacting physical, mental, and emotional health. Children who experience early childhood trauma may be at higher risk for mental health issues, risky behaviors, and other challenges later in life. Children who experience domestic violence within their household can cause a distorted view of love and relationships. For example, Temeka has been prostituting at the age of 12 due to the rape incident she experienced with a guy who she trusted in her home. This incident made her distrust people and not experience any stability in her life. It is important for those who have experienced these types of trauma to seek support to heal and move forward. To prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, and sex trafficking, and support victims, society can take several steps. This can include educating people about
consent, healthy relationships, and the signs of abuse. Helping victims escape abusive situations and access the help they need can be achieved by providing resources and services, such as hotlines, shelters, and counseling services. Strengthening laws and enforcement efforts can deter people from committing these crimes and hold perpetrators accountable. Changing societal attitudes and norms that enable these crimes can include challenging victim-blaming attitudes and promoting gender equality. Supporting organizations and initiatives that work to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, and sex trafficking can also be helpful, through donations, volunteering, or raising awareness. There are organizations within communities that offer help to individuals who have experienced sexual assault, domestic violence, or sex trafficking. These agencies provide services like crisis intervention, counseling, legal help, shelter, and support groups. A community agency local to me is SafeQuest Solano. SafeQuest is a state- funded rape crisis center and domestic violence agency for Solano County. By increasing domestic violence and sex trafficking awareness, providing intervention services, advocating for policies and programs, and providing evidence-based prevention education, they hope to reduce the number of violent crimes. Another agency in Sacramento country is WEAVE. WEAVE provides services for domestic violence and sexual assault. This mission is to promote support and a safe environment for survivors of sexual assault, trafficking, and domestic violence. In addition to community support, there are national hotlines to further provide further support and information to meet the specific caller's needs.
